We kick off the week with West Ham hosting Newcastle on Monday night though, and we should have an entertaining game here. Newcastle come into the game as the favourites at 2.28 with West Ham 3.35 and the draw is 3.65 at the time of writing.
I don’t think it’s too dramatic to call this a must win game for Newcastle. They are just about hanging in there in the Top Four battle; they are on the backfoot and at the moment they just have to win every game and see what happens. Whatever about a Top Four finish – they have to secure a top six finish to get some form of European football next season. Everyone is expecting Nottingham Forest to fall out of the Top Four, then you could say everyone is also expecting Chelsea to take their place – Newcastle could put the cat amongst the pigeons if they can finish the season strongly.
From a West Ham point of view, they put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season when beating Leicester last weekend. Obviously Leicester have been short of Premier League standard this season, but they did beat Arsenal 1-0 prior to that game. It’s the first sign of something positive under Graham Potter – he still had a lot of work to do. I won’t judge West Ham too harshly because obviously things have changed with the new manager, but their average xG conceded this season is exceptionally high at 1.72. Issues at the back have been a consistent problem for the Hammers for a while now – that’s a big job to fix for Potter moving forward.
Newcastle have also been conceding their fair share of chances this season. Their average xG conceded of 1.51 is far too high for a side aiming for a European finish. We should have an entertaining game here with plenty of mistakes at the back. I would lean towards Newcastle in the match odds market, but this game screams goals in my opinion. Over 2.5 goals is trading 1.75 and Both Teams To Score is 1.61. I couldn’t put anyone off either bet, but I marginally prefer the Overs option at the bigger price. It’s a confident bet to kick off the week!
