It’s amazing how the fixture list throws up these situations, but both sides also meet in the Coppa Italia Final on Wednesday night. The mind games start now then! It will be fascinating to see do we get any change to usual starting XI’s or change in tactics. Bologna can’t afford to rest players here or have one eye on the Coppa Italia Final because they desperately need the points in the race for European spots.
They have had a very difficult fixture list to finish the season, but they’ve dropped a lot of points. They’ve only managed one win from their last five games; ironically their one win came against Inter Milan which is obviously a very tough fixture! That run last dropped them down to seventh coming into this week – they are only one point behind Juventus, Roma and Lazio so a win here would see them jump back into the top four before the weekend. AC Milan have really struggled to get results this season, and they sit down in ninth. They are unlikely to get a European spot from the league, so the Cup will be their full focus.
We have an open betting heat; AC Milan are the favourites at 2.58 with Bologna 3.0 and the draw is 3.45 at the time of writing. We should have a high quality game here; AC Milan have the third best attacking figure and Bologna are just behind them in fifth. Bologna have been exceptionally strong at the back this season too – they have the best defensive figure this season – the only side in Serie A with an average xG conceded under 1.0. It’ll be interesting to see how AC Milan handle the Bologna defence given the massive Final coming up next week.
Obviously it’s understandable to see such an open betting heat given AC Milan have failed to get over the line is so many games this season. Bologna have been very difficult to beat, and while I know they are going through a difficult run at the moment I still feel that the 2.58 is too shot on AC Milan here. I would have the market even more open, and from a value point of view I’m happy to lay AC Milan at 2.58. They are more likely to rest players too; but I do see both sides going full strength here. It’s hard to see past a very close game here, and I expect the game to be closer than the odds on AC Milan suggest.
