WEEK AHEAD: The Women’s World Cup picks up pace this week ….
In a week that is sure to be dominated by the FIFA Women’s World Cup we kick off with three matches from the tournament on Monday. With all the games shown live on ITV, the early clash sees a repeat of the men’s ‘Finalissima’ as Italy take on Argentina from 07:00. We then move on to Germany v Morocco, with that game getting underway at 09:30, with the final match of the day seeing one of the favourites in Brazil taking on one of the rank outsiders in Panama at 12:00.
With the Women’s World Cup being held on the other side of the world in Australia and New Zealand, we are going to see our fair share of early starts and the first one of this week comes on Tuesday as BBC One hosts Colombia v South Korea from 03:00. The other two matches for the day will be on ITV as New Zealand v Philippines kicks off at 6:30, followed by Switzerland v Norway at 09:00. Strangely, the latest big action of the day will be at 09:30 on Sky Sports as Stephen Fulton and Naoya Inoue fight it out for the WBC and WBO super-bantamweight titles.
Wednesday sees ITV taking two of the Women’s World Cup fixtures with Japan v Costa Rica and Canada v Republic of Ireland kicking off at 06:00 and 13:00 respectively, while Spain v Zambia will get underway from 08:30 on BBC Two.
With all of golf’s Majors now behind us, Thursday sees a return to PGA Tour action as day one of the 3M Open provides the evening entertainment on Sky Sports from 19:00. It is also the start of what could be a crucial fifth and final Ashes Test as day one of the fifth Test gets under way from 11:00 on Sky Sports. The incredibly early Women’s World Cup action sees USA v Netherlands kick off at 02:00 on BBC One. ITV are showing Portugal v Vietnam from 08:30, while the final game of the day sees Austria take on Nigeria from 11:00 on BBC Two.
The Ashes fifth Test continues on Friday with the first ball of day two to be bowled at 11:00 on Sky Sports. It’s another very early start to the Women’s World Cup action on ITV, with 02:00 the start time for Argentina v South Africa. The Lionesses are the pick of Friday’s action as they take on Denmark live on BBC One at 09:30, with the final Women’s World Cup match of the day being China v Haiti at 12:00 on ITV. Its also the final chance for players to make the cut in the 3M Open as the second round gets underway from 19:00 on Sky Sports.
We start the weekend on Saturday with a bang as some of the biggest footballing nations go head-to-head in the Women’s World cup as Sweden take on Italy live on BBC Two from 08:30, with the next match seeing France v Brazil getting under way at 11:00 on BBC One. The 11:00 slot is also occupied on Sky Sports by the continuation of the Ashes as day three of the fifth Test commences. The afternoon action in the Women’s World Cup sees Panama v Jamaica taking place on ITV from 13:30, while the evening sees the third round of the 3M Open live on Sky Sports from 19:30.
Sunday may be the end of the week but it is certainly not the end of the Women’s World Cup action as there are four games to enjoy, the first of which will see South Korea take on Morocco live on BBC Two from 05:30. The next two both take place on BBC at 08:00, with Norway v Philippines being played alongside Switzerland v co-host nation New Zealand. The fourth and final match of the day is set to start at 10:30 on ITV and sees Germany take on Japan. The fifth Test of the Ashes approaches the business end with day four on Sunday on Sky Sports from 11:00, meaning we will have to wait for next week to know the outcome of the series. Sunday night will see the winner of the 3M Open crowned as coverage of the final round starts from 19:00 on Sky Sports.
