JACK ACED ON THE LINE IN CUP: Daqman and Pricewise were just half a length apart in a thrilling finish to the Chester Cup yesterday but both were pipped by the flying Trip To Paris. Diamondsandrubies (WON 5-4), added to Daqman’s tally so the score is now 23-5 in his favour before the 2.10 and 3.10 races today.
BALLYDOYLE THE TRIAL BANKER: Ballydoyle, responsible for that ‘Diamond’ filly yesterday, can do the double with Hans Holbein the Derby-trial Chester Vase this afternoon, continuing the hot form of jockey Ryan Moore. Banker, says Daqman.
HANS UP! HOLBEIN CAN STEAL THE VASE
3.10 Chester Vase After yesterday’s Ballydoyle demolition job in the Cheshire Oaks, stablemate Hans Holbein puts a lesser reputation on the line. But Aidan O’Brien’s record in this race is revealed by form figures since 2007 of 10101411, and not a lot to beat today.
The sequence includes the 2013 Epsom Derby winner, Ruler Of The World, a Galileo where Hans Holbein is a Montjeu, but both with just the one maiden success going into this race.
Tannaaf and Proposed have already been beaten by a Ballydoyle colt (Cape Clear Island at Newmarket’s Craven meeting), and the slightly quirky Leicester maiden winner Storm The Stars is currently rated almost a stone behind the top three.
Medrano got a high mark for winning a Listed at Haydock but couldn’t justify it afterwards, last in the Royal Lodge and then well beaten on soft ground in France.
Godolphin’s Future Empire, runner-up in the Derby trial at Epsom could improve for the extra trip but Hans Holbein wouldn’t have to be very much to take this.
COLLABORATION JUST KEEPS ON IMPROVING
2.10 Chester Tres Coronas won this last year but is 11lb worse off with the two-lengths runner-up Sennockian Star.
‘Star’ is hard to win with and looks exposed but, in fact, has been let off that 11lb by the handicapper since the start of the year.
His trainer, Mark Johnston, who also has Master Of Finance in the race, has been lucky with the draw: they are in 5 and 2 respectively.
Master Of Finance has already won at Chester (7f), was beaten half a length here at the backend of last year, giving weight to the winner, and made all at Pontefract early last month.
His second April run probably came a bit quickly, and he could bounce back. On the other hand, he won first time out last year, and didn’t score again. He’s off his highest mark now.
Collaboration (in stall 3) shot up from class 5 to class 2 last month, the back-to-back wins – on turning tracks, by the way – warranting a 20lb rise.
He won nearly five lengths at Epsom and had Elkaayed and Sennockian Star behind, so may not have stopped winning yet.
Our Gabrial, a CD winner here last June, and Gabrial’s Kaka – a miler – will be trying to recoup Chester Cup losses for Dr Marwan Koukash but Our Gabrial hasn’t had a run back, and he’s never won above class 3.
Master Of Finance – a topical tip on Election Day – is a likely trade, as front-runner from stall 2, but I think Collaboration can continue his sequence.
2.40 Chester Older horses rarely win this. Aged four and five are nine out of 10. Sir Michael Stoute was four out of five in this from 2005-9, all of them favourites.
Cannock Chase is likely to follow suit, both as favourite and winner. He started out in a small field for the Sir Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown, looking for all the world as if the run would do him good.
Some of Stoute’s come out and go straight into the winners’ enclosure (Bragging for instance); others (Telescope) take time and placing to find their stride, but the majority of his older horses improve at four and five.
Cannock Chase (only five runs on the CV) is obviously not easy to train but is up 22lb on this time last year and is Group-1 entered. Doesn’t want too much rain but is a banker in current conditions.
The rest of this field – barring the handicapper Maverick Wave – are a year and more older and have had their chance of making the big time.
Both Air Pilot and Windhoek have managed only Listed wins in their attempts to make an impression in Pattern company.
5.25 Chester It’s hard to find a ‘price’ today but that shrewd operator Tom Tate has sent Empress Ali (exchanging at 7.4 early mouse) just three times to this course for a win and two seconds.
She front-runs or goes with the pace and will love any rain that falls. Stall 4 is also a big help.
She beat Master Of Finance on the course in September, so a good run from him in the opener would give you confidence. That’s where I came in.
