WORLD CUP GROUP G: The Ultra previews BELGIUM v IRAN with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
🏆 World Cup 2026 🏆
🇧🇪 Belgium v Iran 🇮🇷
8pm Group G resumes on Sunday evening as Belgium take on Iran at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on WORLD CUP 2026 Betdaq Betting Exchange! . As I said in my Group G preview, Belgium usually sail through qualifying and fluff their lines at major tournaments, and they still have work to do after a 1-1 draw with Egypt on Matchday One. Iran, meanwhile, come into this off the back of an extraordinary 2-2 draw with New Zealand played out against a backdrop unlike anything else at this World Cup, the stands were packed with Iran supporters – probably a surprise to most USA football fans – and no doubt they will turn out in their numbers again for this one.
As you would expect, Belgium come into the game as the odds on favourites at 1.46 with Iran 8.6 and the draw is 4.8 at the time of writing. Belgium not beating Egypt will sting more than the score line suggests. They went into the game as the 1.7 favourites after all. De Bruyne hit the post with a free kick and generally looked sharp, but the front foot urgency just wasn’t there for long periods, and this is a Belgium side that failed to get out of their Group in 2022. On paper, they have two easy fixtures to finish the Group; but they are under pressure and we’ve seen Belgium crumble under pressure plenty of times before. Los Angeles has one of the largest Iranian diaspora communities anywhere outside Iran itself, and after the scenes around the New Zealand game – fans defying FIFA’s flag ban, protests outside the stadium before kick-off – were probably going to have a few more headlines from this game.
Obviously Iran are really up against it off the field. This is the first World Cup in history where the host nation has been at war with one of the participating teams; Iran’s preparation has been compromised at almost every turn, with the squad barred from training on US soil, eleven non-playing staff denied visas altogether. Obviously they can stay in the USA, so after the New Zealand draw, the entire squad was put on a flight out of Los Angeles to their Tijuana training base within hours of the final whistle, with manager Amir Ghalenoei saying the players had expected to stay overnight and accusing the US and FIFA of “oppressing” his team; the USA side maintains the same day turnaround was always the plan. We did know that in fairness before the tournament started. However, it’s obviously not ideal from an Iran point of view. I backed them to beat New Zealand despite all the travel issues; they battled hard for a 2-2 draw, having to come back twice.

Leaving aside all the Iran issues, there is a big gulf in class between the sides here. Whatever the travel disruption does to recovery time, there’s clearly a spirit in this Iran squad that shouldn’t be underestimated, and I wouldn’t be rushing to take the 1.46 on Belgium. Iran played some good football to get here; it’s hard to make the case that they should be shorter. Iran played a reasonably open game against New Zealand, and we could see goals here. Over 2.5 goals is trading 1.92 which looks a nice position. I’m happy to keep stakes small here; pressure on Belgium and obviously a lot going on with Iran.
