SHAMROCK AT NAAS: For the Listed race on the card. In a rare move he is having two bets in the same race.
Really disappointing effort last night from the nap, Sense Of Victory, who never really got competitive and finished fourth behind Sherlock Holmes who won very readily indeed.
Back to the drawing board today and there’s a decent card from Naas this evening featuring the Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Naas Oaks Trial at 7.30pm.
The Dermot Weld trained Variable is quite a short price for this (around 2.02 on BETDAQ at the time of writing) and it’s easy to see why. She is lightly raced and likely to make considerable improvement.
She started odds-on for her debut at Gowran Park but could only finish second to Hot Sauce however the winner subsequently finished second in a Newbury Listed contest.
On her next start Variable stormed home by six and a half lengths from Sense Of Victory (who let me down yesterday!) at Cork.
You can certainly argue a case that Sense Of Victory’s tame effort last night has let that form down but I think that would be pretty unfair on Variable and she looks set to handle the step up in class and give Weld his third win in the race from the last four.
Easter was beaten in Group 3 company on her reappearance at the Curragh and is by no means certain to do better over the extra two furlongs here.
Rivers Of Babylon is the most experienced filly in the line up and arrives here in good heart having made all the running to win at Gowran Park and Navan but this is her first soiree into Listed company and this represents a much tougher task.
Wooden Heart might be the over-priced runner in the race, she ran quite well behind Radanpour in the King George V Cup – a Listed event at Leopardstown and will be suited by the return to 1m 2f.
Variable is the NAP but (highly unusually!) I’m also including a bet on the big priced Wooden Heart.
