SLIGO SUNDAY NAP: SHAMROCK stays at home on Sunday for a NAP on the Sligo card which starts at 2.20pm. He also has two bets in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.
It’s STARTING to feel a little more spring like and we are promised better weather next week but it’s still winter ground at Sligo (soft and heavy in places).
The going must surely be responsible for an entry of just three runners in the 4.05pm race over seven furlongs.
Despite the small field there looks to be a little bit of value in taking on the current favourite Pinwood who made a winning debut at Listowel last September on heavy ground but hasn’t been seen since.
The form of that race looks very modest – both the second and third have been well beaten subsequently and I am surprised to see Pinwood (1.88) trading ahead of the more experienced Orangey Red (2.3) on the BETDAQ market.
Dermot Weld’s runner also has winning form on testing ground over this trip. She stormed home by nine and a half lengths to win over this trip at Limerick last month and followed up with a reasonable handicap debut also at Limerick when 5th of 16 over a mile which might well have proved too far.
A big Irish representation in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Aidan O’Brien’s Minding is the hot favourite and she looked very smart last season – winning the Group 1 Dubai Fillies Mile here on her final start having previously won the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh, narrowly, from stable companions Ballydoyle and Alice Springs who both take her on again today.
The value, for me, is backing the ‘other pair’ win and place as I don’t think there is as much between the trio as the market is suggesting.
