FIVE WINNERS OUT OF SIX! Shamrock has named five winners from the six in his Daq Trio in the last two days, including back-to-back naps, producing four doubles and a treble at SPs of 9-4, 85-40, 15-8, 6-5 and 1-4. His naps results in the last 15 days are 212111122B2411.

1.05 Thurles The fate of novices with a penalty is strewn across the recent racecards in England and Ireland but many will not lose faith in Pickapocketortwo, with Willie Mullins two out of four in this race.

Though one clear top-weight was beaten at odds on, six joint top-weights in eight years have won this race, so the signs are good.

‘Pickapocket’ won a very slow, small-field race over CD last time out, and Benefficient made all at Navan over subsequent winner, Knockgraffon King.

Archie Mead has no chance on a line to the favourite through Jack Bene, nor has Castle Wings via Ipsos Du Berlais, and Willie Mullins should know where he is with Star Neuville since his own Vesper Bell ran up to that one at Leopardstown.

And I don’t see any significance in Ruby Walsh riding Benefficient, since Patriuck Mullins is keeping a mount he has ridden so well.

1.35 Thurles Walsh takes back the ride on Apt Approach, who won for him here over 3m, so I expect forcing tactics, dropped to 2m 4f.

Roberto Goldback has always had the upper hand on Follow The Plan, except for unseating at Punchestown when he was still a length up.

I’m not a ‘Roberto’ man; I think he’s hard to win with (one success in two years) and Apt Approach revels in the mud.

2.05 Thurles Here’s another of those same questions of whether a penalized novice can give the weight away, this time in a chase.

Knockfierna went on everyone’s horses-to-follow list after backing up a Wexford win with defeat of a smart field of novices at Cork, including today’s rivals, Our Victoria and Golden Sunbird.

He ran out at Limerick, leading into the straight after some slow jumping but there was no pace on, and I’ll forgive him that no-race.

A bigger worry is that Willie Mullins pushes Dare To Doubt in at the deep end; he had some good hurdles form.

But if you want to argue hurdles form, the official ratings are in fact Banjaxed Girl 148, Dare To Doubt 141, yet Banjaxed Girl is 9.0 on Betdaq this morning, as I write.

2.35 Thurles More novices, just to make the day more difficult: again, if you go on hurdles rating, there’s not much in it: Bishopsfurze 138, Frisco Depot 136.

It’s hard to call over fences – they’ve had one chase run, one win apiece – but I liked the way Bishopsfurze coped with the drop back to 2m 2f and should enjoy the step up in trip today.
