EARLY KICK OFF: Racing starts early on Thursday in a bid to mitigate the heatwave. Nottingham is first away at 10.30am.

ARC TURNS UP THE HEAT

A MONK to win the Irish Derby, a gelding to score in the Arc? Maybe it’s the heat wave affecting me.

The decision to open the classic of classics in Paris so that the best geldings can take on the best colts, fillies and mares is probably giving way to pressure in a year when the Arc without geldings rules out world’s-best Calandagan and King George winner Goliath.

Their trainer, Francis-Henry Graffard, represents the top ownership and breeding names in France.

Should that mean power? Hard to argue when we have an Irish Derby on Sunday in which only three runners are not trained by one of the O’Brien family: of the 11 runners, Aidan has 5, Donnacha 2 and Joseph 1.

The official ratings favour Christmas Day 118, Benvenuto Cellini 114 and A Boy Named Susie 114.

But only a couple of pounds behind that O’Brien group is Raaheeb, whose name means ‘monk’.

And, though Owen Burrows son of Sea The Stars, has had only two races (2-2), he is racing off 112, as winner of the Sandown Classic Trial.

Stranger things have happened and, clearly, even stranger things will be happening in the racing world, whether we like them or not.

A GLORIOUS TIP

⭕ 12.15 Newmarket (Empress Fillies’ Stakes Listed) Glorious Game takes a big step up in class after her Windsor debut win 17 days ago but she did it nicely and made all the running.

We got a reading on the form at Royal Ascot last week when third placed Roxelina finished 11th in the Albany Stakes.

With likely further improvement Glorious Game should be able to cope with this rise in grade against some more experienced types. Havana Sprite has improved with each start and lost her maiden tag with an easy win at Bath where she landed odds of 4/11. This looks much tougher though and I prefer her stablemate Beauty Box who won nicely at Ripon.

What A Girl Wants finished only 21st in the Albany mentioned above so shouldn’t really be able to beat Glorious Game on that form line.

AS CLEAR AS MUD

⭕ 12.45 Newmarket Even with the considerable assistance of Ryan Moore, Aalto looks a Betdaq Betting Exchange favourite to take on today. He’s definitely got some back class and is down another 2lb but is not really coming into this in the best form – although in fairness his run at York last time out in a class 3 handicap is probably best ignored given he was denied a run several times during the race.

I’ll chance Mudbir who is having his first run since being gelded. He is versatile ground wise and has good form at class 2 level to suggest he can go very close in this class 3.

Nostrum is on a long losing run but has shown enough in his last two starts at Sandown and Newbury to suggest a podium finish could be on the cards.

RUBY TO SHINE

⭕ 8.30 Hamilton Form figures of 35-46 don’t immediately draw you in to Ruby Wedding but the Andrew Balding trained filly takes a welcome drop in class and should be able to dominate here.

After a promising fourth in a class 3 at Sandown she finished a four a half length sixth at Ascot in a race where the form is working out well with two subsequent winners in front of her.
