GAVIN CROMWELL: BETDAQ Brand Ambassador Gavin Cromwell looks ahead to the stables runners this weekend including Aasleagh Fawn who he feels is much better than she showed at Down Royal.
Wexford Saturday
We begin a busy weekend with Ciao in the maiden hurdle (2.00pm). It’s her first start over hurdles for the yard, but she’s been very consistent on the Flat and this looks a nice opportunity for her to start out over obstacles. Off her Flat mark you’d have to respect her, particularly as she’s schooled well and seems to have taken to jumping.
Life On Earth runs in the handicap hurdle (2.35pm) and is back after a little break. She’s been a bit disappointing in her last few starts and we haven’t quite been able to put our finger on why, but she seems in good form at home. If things do click, her mark doesn’t look too bad and we’re hoping for an improved performance.
Our final runner at Wexford is Allduckornodinner in the handicap hurdle (3.10pm). He’s another who is off a short break, but prior to that he’d been running really consistently. He still looks well-handicapped with Conor McNamara taking off five pounds and we’re hoping for a big run.
Navan Saturday
Aasleagh Fawn steps up to 1m6f at Navan on Saturday (4.05pm). The track, trip and ground should all be to her liking and while she ran okay at Down Royal the last day, we think she’s a good bit better than that. We’d like to think she’ll be involved this time around and should go close if things fall into place.
Ally Cay takes her chance in the apprentice handicap (4.40pm) under good young jockey Shane Crosse. She comes into this having not run since mid-July, but she’s got a nice draw in stall seven and she should like the track as well. She needs to step up on what she’s done so far, though we think she can and goes there with an each-way squeak.
In the last race on the card (5.50pm), we run Espoir Et Bonheur who is having her first start for us having joined from the Kevin Prendergast yard. She’s shown us enough at home to suggest she’s got some ability, although this maiden might be a bit of a tough ask with one of Jim Bolger’s looking a pretty handy type. We’ll know a lot more about her after this.
Listowel Sunday
Just the one runner for us on Sunday. Theatre Of War will have his second start in the 3-Y-O hurdle (2.00pm) at Listowel. He didn’t jump great at Down Royal, but was upsides the leaders before completely missing the last and he never really recovered from that. We’re turning him around quite quickly here as we think he’ll take it in his stride and if he can brush up on his jumping, he could easily get involved.
