WISE UP, PUNTERS! BETDAQ IS THE ONLY PLACE TO BE: Ascot was a complete washout for favourites yesterday: seven consecutive losers. Six lost at Haydock. But it was advantage bookmakers twice over as they punished punters with high SP percentages: 132, 129 and 120% totals were recorded at Ascot; 123 (twice), 124 and 125% at Haydock. But the BETDAQ offers on my race pick this morning added up to 105, 106, 107% at Haydock; 105 to 112% at Ascot.

BETDAQ 8.2 IS BIG-VALUE CALCULATION

1.50 Haydock Moon King has improved more than two stone in five consecutive wins this year. This is another step up today but he’s scored over the Haydock CD on heavy.

Royal runner Calculation, son of a Gold Cup winner, has shot through the ranks even faster, 22lb in three starts visored, also including a Haydock CD success with cut in the ground.

Yet both sequence horses get at least 9lb from First In Line, the only one of the three to attempt a class-2 contest, beaten threeparts of a length in the Melrose, which was responsible for last year’s winner.

When Calculation beat Mondain here at Haydock in July (good to soft), they had Tidal Point – earlier runner-up to Moon King – a long way behind and, with First In Line unraced on soft, Calculation, who has bags of stamina, gets my vote at BETDAQ 8.2 offers.

12.0 FANAAR FINE ON BRITANNIA FORM

2.45 Ascot Last year’s winner, Ripp Orf, is down to within a pound of his rating that day but is hard to win with (4-26) and his jockey last backend, Jason Watson, can no longer claim.

All three turf wins have come on firm ground, and Ascot seems to be cloudy but dodging the rain. Spanish City, Arbalet and Fanaar shortened overnight.

On Bunbury Cup form, Spanish City was 8lb better for around a length with (withdrawn) Vale Of Kent. City was fourth in this race last year on the same terms with Ripp Orf but is claimed off (7lb) and wears cheekpieces for the first time.

Blinkered today in the hope of revival is Arbalet, who would come into it if reproducing his International second here off 9lb higher, but I’m talking August, 2018, and he’s disappointed since.

Pogo’s win at York was his second surprise success of the year, and he’s only ever been backed in very small fields: five runners in August, 2018 (won) and three in the September (last); otherwise, he’s started double-figure odds up to 66-1.

In theory, then, if you back him, you won’t know – nor will connections – whether you’ll get a run for your money or not!

Fanaar was third, beaten about a length, giving him a pound at York, so is now 3lb better off. His third here in the Britannia on an easy surface at the royal meeting made 12.0 offers look value on BETDAQ this morning.

Tabarrak is difficult to keep right and not sure to repeat his Goodwood form. Short of room, just failed to catch Salute The Soldier, and allowed a pound to get his revenge. Sanaadh (a length-and-a-half fifth) is 4lb better.

Escobar eased in the betting overnight. He dropped a few pounds and won over a mile at York but that put him back up in the ratings and this is 7f.

DOYLE BOOKED: GET THE POINT AT 11.5

3.35 Haydock (Old Borough Cup) Last year’s winner of this (on heavy), Reshoun took the November Handicap afterwards, so a fairly tight hold is kept on him in the ratings.

Corelli doesn’t like company and may race wide of the field. He certainly has little company at the top of the handicap with 9st 10lb, though the stable won it with Nautilus (9st 7lb) in 2014.

He is a horse without a trip so far, and his rating is really all about his Springtime second to subsequent Duke Of Edinburgh winner, Baghdad, who was a flop at Group level after.

CD winner Garbanzo is up in grade but fresher than the rest. I prefer Blakeney Point (James Doyle booked), 7lb lower than when fifth in the Ebor last year, and likes soft ground: BETDAQ 11.5 taken.

Corelli (6.2) has to be backed as the loose canon of the race. May yet be a Group horse in a handicap.

DREAM CHANCE FOR DANNY IN THE CUP

4.10 Haydock Sprint Cup Sir Michael Stoute is famous for improving older horses, and soft ground for the Haydock Sprint may have presented the prize to his Dream of Dreams, officially top rated in today’s field.

Danny Tudhope’s mount would have beaten Blue Point for the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot in one more stride (The Tin Man and Invincible Army behind), and Blue Point had beaten Battaash (Fairyland fifth) in the furlong-shorter King Stand two days earlier.

A winner three times with cut in the ground, Dreams’ 10lb rise this year has come despite firm surfaces, though it finally seemed to catch up with him when down the field in the July Cup (or did Dream of Dreams, an entire, have dreams of his own that day?)

Stewards Cup winner, Khaadem, wasn’t beaten far by Waldpfad at Newbury, but Waldpfad’s runner-up in the Golden Whip at Baden-Baden since then was well behind Forever In Dreams and Hello Youmzain in the Commonwealth Cup (won by Advertise, with Ten Sovereigns fourth).

The Tin Man and Brando, first and second, separated by half a length, in this Haydock race last year, will relish the mud. The Tin Man was giving 7lb to Dream of Dreams when beaten two lengths at Windsor in the Spring, which makes them just about equal today. I took 7.4 Dream Of Dreams and 10.5 The Tin Man.
