GLEN JOHNSON: In this week’s blog, Glen previews Sunday’s mega match between Liverpool v Man U with a backdrop of an ever increasing gulf between the two sides PLUS despite Kane’s injury, Southgate has plenty of options up front for England.
The huge gap between Liverpool and Man U
Ahead of their game at Anfield on Sunday, it’s hard to think of a time when there has been a bigger gulf in class between Liverpool and Manchester United. There’s obviously still a massive rivalry between the two clubs because of the history between them, but in terms of where they are now there is no comparison. The points gap between the two means it’s not nearly as big a game as it’s been in the past, which is a bit of a shame but I guess that’s due to how good Liverpool have been so far this season. Being as far ahead as they are, it doesn’t really matter if they drop points and that’s a very nice luxury for Jurgen Klopp.
United are the only side to have taken points off Liverpool so far, but I’m not sure that will have any bearing on Sunday’s match. United will always up their game for this fixture and you can expect a much improved performance than they’ve been showing for large parts of the season so far. However, I still don’t think that will be enough and expect the Reds to get the job done.
One of the best games to play in
Despite the gap, this is still one of the biggest matches in English football. It might have been knocked off its perch slightly because of United’s struggles, but it’s still one of the ones in the calendar you always looked forward to.
It’s one of the best games I played in and it starts as soon as the previous fixture finishes. The whole week leading up to it is pretty special, there’s a talk amongst the players, the fans and in the city centre too, which shows how important it is to people from all walks of life. What separates it from a lot of matches is that you’re so fearful of losing. They are so important that players do things they wouldn’t usually do because they are so focused on winning and are fearful of making mistakes.
England have plenty of options up front
With the way Jamie Vardy has been playing this season, it’s no surprise he’s being tipped to get an England recall. However, he’s turned his back on the national side for a reason and he clearly thinks that is the best thing to prolong his career.
When you’ve got a young English striker like Tammy Abraham who is scoring goals and then you choose someone over him who has chosen to retire, it doesn’t send the right message. Danny Ings is in great form too, so it’s not like Gareth Southgate doesn’t have options at the top-end of the pitch. Obviously we’re all hoping Harry Kane will make it back to full fitness in time for the Euros, though, as he will be a big part of us going deep in the competition.
