CATTERICK FAVOURITES ROMP: Daqman opens with a close-up on Catterick’s favourites romp yesterday; dream or nightmare.

799-1 DREAM OR NIGHTMARE?

Favourites (one joint) went through the card yesterday. But the seven-race spree of gambles at Catterick tells only a fraction of the story.

The opening-race winner, never sent off shorter than 150-1 in its previous starts, was first leg of a double of outsider gambles from the same stable, and they came close to pulling it off.

The 50-1 second leg, eventually sent off at only 9-2, was leading when it unseated rider at the tenth fence, the race won by (you guessed it) the 4-1 favourite, Spot On Soph.

The beginning of the story is reported in the trade Press as a ‘a dream start’ when Pittsburg won. Are they kidding! What kind of nightmare for punters is this, with the so-called ‘form’ book revealing only this appalling record:

🏇 Pittsburg (trained Ryan Potter): seven races P00PP0P at 150-1, 300-1, 150-1, 200-1, 200-1, 150-1 and 160-1. Then yesterday: ‘travelled strongly; going easily after 2 out’; WON 11-4.

🏇 Marias Lad (trained Ryan Potter): was 50-1 in to 9-2 for the second leg but unseated when leading at the 10th. His previous form with SP was 00PP at 40-1, 200-1, 300-1, 200-1. He was a cinch then, compared with his stablemate!

The 799-1 accumulator of winning favourites is headlined in the trade paper as a ‘seventh heaven’ for punters. Neat, but utterly meaningless. Only blind favourite backers could have been on.

To land such a sequence in any other way, you needed to complete your bet with (or to be certified as) Kracka Nut!

He won the last at 11-4, ironically beating Forward Plan with Ballymist third, and down the field, in ninth, Whatsgoingon. You may well ask!

VALSHEDA LOOKS THE PLAN

⭕ 1.25 Newbury These are largely old boys coming to a race for young prospects (9-10 winners aged five and six in the decade).

You’d think the experience of nine-year-old Colonial Dreams and Barnaviddaun is why they are giving weight as well as youth.

In fact, the pair of them have never jumped a fence in public, unless you count Barnaviddaun’s fourth (btn 22 lengths) in a Point. Both are hurdles winners, but it’s a ripe old age to switch to fences.

The winless chasing careers so far of I K Brunel (3 places), The Macon Lugnatic (nil) and Tide Times (2nd the last day) amount to very little, though Tide Times is getting weight all round.

Of the youngsters, Valsheda’s light weight is partly thanks to the presence of stablemate Colonial Dreams, and he was described by Nicky Henderson last Spring, when he won a hurdle at Exeter, as ‘a chaser in the making’.

The other six-year-old, Quartz Du Rheu (Jonjo O’Neill for J P McManus), has more chasing experience than the rest of the field put together but this is his first try on a top track.

BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE 3.8 Valsheda, 5.6 Quartz Du Rheu

SILVER’S SET FOR FESTIVAL

⭕ 2.00 Newbury Jessica Harrington has won this three years running with her Grand National runner-up, Magic Of Light, and there seems nothing of that ilk this afternoon.

But the mare first bagged this Listed off 138 and there are three in the race today with better ratings credentials at the same stage: 143 Bridge Native, 142 Chilli Filli and Silver Forever.

Bridge Native is the Irish connection. Galway is her happy hunting-ground (two wins and a festival fourth) and she is 2-2 over fences at Tramore but we’re talking mainly 2m. Today is 2m 7f plus; in fact, a few yards short of three miles.

Chilli Filli is on a hat-trick after two mares Listed wins already either side of her summer break. Her success has all come right-handed

Silver Forever also won either side of a break but a very long one because of injury, with success only in small fields, the last day a two-horse race on her chasing debut.

A career 7-3 suggests she rarely misses when the trainer gets her right, and he says: ‘She’s such high class she will go for the mares’ chase at the Cheltenham Festival.’

The market, which was know-all at Catterick yesterday, insists on Silver Forever (2.24) with Chilli Filli easy to back and Bridge Native not wanted at 21.0. But keep your Daq up; anything might happen. And does.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
