THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Tuesday’s Big Bash match between Melbourne Stars v Melbourne Renegades with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
Melbourne Stars v Melbourne Renegades
MATCH OVERVIEW:
It’s the Melbourne Derby on Tuesday morning at the Big Bash, and we should have a cracker on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. This is always a great occasion in the Big Bash calendar, and it will be interesting to see what kind of crowd they get at the MCG. Obviously it’s a massive stadium, and it can look quite empty with even 40,000 in it – with Cricket Australia under pressure as attendances drop in the Big Bash, it’s not a good look!
After an excellent start the tournament, Melbourne Renegades have now lost four in a row after slipping to a defeat against Perth Scorchers on New Years Day. Nic Maddinson had to leave the field with what looked like a serious knee injury, and that just leaves the Renegades in even more trouble. Maddinson is a talented cricketer, but he had been in terrible form this Big Bash – maybe he’s not the loss he seems on paper.
The Stars have also been struggling this season. They’ve only managed two wins from their six games, and it’s clear to see what a loss Glenn Maxwell is to the balance of the side. They did power their way to 186/7 on New Years Eve to beat Adelaide Strikers but that included a wonderful innings from Marcus Stoinis. When I look at their side now I always feel if he doesn’t go big, then the Stars are in trouble. An interesting game here, with both sides facing a lot of questions.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
The MCG always hosts the Boxing Day Test, so we’ve only had one Big Bash game here. That was back in mid-December, and Melbourne Stars posted 183/5 before winning by 38 runs. That’s a very big score for this ground because the outfield is so big we don’t usually see too many sixes. I would suggest batting first if you won the toss here, and you’re definitely in the game with anything over 160. Both batting units look a little light on paper, neither can be fully trusted.
RECOMMENDED BET:
With both sides having their own issues this season, it’s easy to see why the market can’t split the sides here. Both are trading around 2.0, and it will be interesting to see is there any more for either closer to the start of the game. I’m definitely keeping stakes low here – after a positive start everything has gone wrong for the Renegades, and the Stars look weak on paper this season too. Everything seems to be going wrong for the Renegades at the moment, and they must be low on confidence. There really isn’t much between the sides here, but I just feel this fixture arrives at a good time for the Stars. They have home advantage, and that just might be the difference.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
As I said above, there really isn’t much between the sides here so we should see the odds bounce around quite a bit in-running. Both sides look a little weak with the bat, so the game will likely be decided on one innings from either side – Finch for Renegades or Stoinis for the Stars. I wouldn’t spend too long on a trade on either batting side, and I feel the biggest edge will be getting on the team batting first as they’ll have best use of conditions, and chasing is reasonably difficult here with the big boundaries.
