SMILE! IT’S ANOTHER DAQMAN NAP: Daqman was in classic form with a profit across the cards yesterday, including his nap, Smile And Pay, at Redcar before making it two out of three with You Saw Brigadoon at the evening AW meeting.
WON 10-11 SMILE AND PAY (nap)
WON 11-5 YOU SAW BRIGADOON
TODAY: Newmarket and Goodwood on terrestrial TV
TOMORROW: The 2,000 Guineas
SUNDAY: The 1,000 Guineas
LEADING US A DANCE..
⭕ 1.15 Newmarket In fields of mainly six to nine runners, all winners in the decade have come from stalls 1 to 4: four from the one stall and four from gate 2.
So, interesting that Castle Way won here last backend, proving it’s possible to switch, from the outside stall 6.
No switching needed today; he’s in the one stall here, scheduled to be a Royal Ascot Derby runner (King Edward V11 Stakes) from Godolphin’s big pool of three-year-olds, whereas Salt Bay, Circle of Fire and Like A Tiger are still in the Derby from teams with just one or two possibles among their colts.
Salt Bay (stall 3) ran a decent third in the Group 1 Saint-Cloud Criterium on heavy, the winner having finished second in the National Stakes at the Curragh.
Royal runner on the eve of the Coronation is Circle Of Fire (gate 2), who went clear at Salisbury of a subsequent winner. Like A Tiger tries to step up from a CD handicap win.
The fourth well-drawn runner is Forca Timao (4), a ready winner at Doncaster but returning after a long break since.
No fancy entries at all for Castle Way’s stablemate, Victory Dance, but he was the one for the money this morning, raised markedly in trip, so we have to split our stakes, despite his draw in 8.
Betdaq Betting Exchange value 4.8 Victory Dance, 7.2 Castle Way
NATIVE TRAIL WELL CLEAR
⭕ 1.50 Newmarket (Mile) Andrew Balding likes this race, and goes for his third win in nine seasons with an outsider, Imperial Fighter.
He was unsuited by heavy ground on his reappearance at Doncaster but, at his best, was a staying-on third to Native Trail in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
Officially that still leaves him 10lb to find today with Native Trail, who had earlier placed in the Newmarket Guineas, and should be another for Charlie Appleby’s Godolphin team.
Light Infantry, twice beaten narrowly by fillies at the Deauville summer meetings – Tenebrism and then Inspiral – is a pound higher than Native Trail.
It’s hard to see why of this Guineas ninth, even allowing for his Jean Prat and Jacques Le Marois places.
Mutasaabeq, hampered when last year’s neck runner-up in this Mile, may front-run today but is hampered this time by his penalty.
RING SHOULD HAVE WON IT
⭕ 2.25 Newmarket Favourites have won six in a row, and six out of nine came out of stalls 1 and 2, and Majestic Pride (out of 8), who won on the soft at the Craven Meeting, was a drifter this morning.
The only stable to break a run of favourites has been Richard Hannon’s yard (twice) and he’ll be trying the trick again with Shouldvebeenaring, out of the one stall.
Shouldvebeenaring has failed to reach the first four in two races over 7f, but the four-time winner over 6f probably ran his best race when third here last month in a big-field sprint handicap.
He was drawn wide that day and finished with a rattle; Sean Levy takes over. Iconic Moment, his nearest rival on the ratings, landed an AW hat-trick over 7f.
BETDAQ value 4.4 Shouldvebeenaring
A YORKSHIRE DARK HORSE
⭕ 3.00 Newmarket We’ve seen how low stalls do best over this distance on the Rowley Mile. From the one stall, Star Of Orion has failed to improve for, first of all, blinkers and then the visor.
He will like today’s firmish ground and has slipped in the weights, so is preferred to The Gatekeeper from stall 2, and the older horses, Lord Rapscallion (aged 7) and Accidental Agent (9).
Final Watch, who comes out of stall 8, has shown his best form at Ascot, where he beat into the places Persuasion (2nd) and Lord Rapscallion (4th) when amateur ridden.
But David O’Meara comes down from Yorkshire in flying form (4-9) and Darkness has excellent credentials off this lower mark since a few lengths short of the winner in the Victoria Cup and several other decent handicaps.
BETDAQ value 7.1 Darkness
THIS ONE’S BEEN BACKED
⭕ 1.30 Goodwood This has not gone to an unraced two-year-old so far; experience of this downhill track is imperative, though the pace is nowhere near as fast as, say, Epsom.
The grey Beenham was given considerate handling at Bath and has been well backed this morning.
Dubai Hills went to Chantilly for the soft ground and, from a plum draw, ran on well, second of a big field. Not so well installed today out of gate 6.
⭕ 2.05 Goodwood First-time winner last season,Voodoo Queen (gate 8) was well supported in the market this morning but 90% of winners cornered this 1m 4f fillies’ Listed from stalls 1 to 5.
Time Lock (2) had Voodoo Queen behind when she went close in the (Listed) Galtres at York. Both are by Frankel.
DEALIN ON THE EXCHANGE
⭕ 2.35 Goodwood In the absence of Clarendon House, beaten a head in this last year, Whenthedealinsdone has the benefit of Benoit De La Sayette’s claim.
Revised marks demand further improvement from winners Prop Forward and Dream Composer, and Reigning Profit is raised sharply in class. BETDAQ value 4.5 Whenthedealinsdone
