NEWBURY HAS BETDAQ VALUE OFFERS: The London Gold Cup and the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, plus five more meetings in England today, mixed Flat and Jumps. Daqman has bets at 8.1, 8.4, 9.4 and 14.5 offers on BETDAQ.
*Daqman’s ‘seconditis’ struck again yesterday. After Tees Spirit (2nd 17-2) and Pawapuri (2nd 7-2) on Thursday, he named Miss Lamai (2nd 7-2 from BETDAQ 11.5 taken) and King’s Code (2nd 14-1 from 16.5).
DISAPPOINTING DERBY: Starting next week, Daqman’s countdown to the Epsom Derby will try to find an alternative to an out-of-form favourite after the crushing blows to Godolphin’s hopes (See It’ All Ballydoyle). Next weekend: the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
THE DERBY: IT’S ALL BALLYDOYLE
CITY OF TROY could be odds on! That’s the way the Derby market is going after huge setbacks for Godolphin, Ballydoyle’s great rivals.
First they were beaten in this week’s colts’ trial, the Dante Stakes, when Ancient Wisdom was slammed six lengths by an unknown, Economics, saddled by William Haggas but declared an Epsom non-runner.
Only hours after Charlie Appleby boasted that William Buick was always going to be on Arabian Crown anyway, Godolphin had to announce that the Sandown Classic Trial winner would be out until late season because of ‘a setback.’
Now the way is clear for City of Troy to ‘do an Auguste Rodin’ and win at Epsom after an outrageous flop in the 2,000 Guineas, which Aidan O’Brien now admits might be ‘down to the way’ he trained him.
The only man who can stop City Of Troy starting at odds on is.. Aidan O’Brien! He has Los Angeles, Diego Velazquez and Capulet making up the front of the market among a total of 13 he has still left in.
The last-to-first O’Brien credo also works fairly well in reverse. Hot-favourite Tower Of London, winner of the Dubai Gold Cup, was literally nowhere to be found at the business end of the Yorkshire Cup yesterday.
Oisin Murphy on the winner, Giavellotto, had a long look round as he set his mount alight, worried where Ryan Moore was.
Tellyviewers also had a puzzled look back to spot Tower Of London trailing 11 lengths in rear, heading only one horse home.
The time was fast and was the latest feather in Marco Botti’s training cap. But, in this season of last shall be first and first shall be last, Giavellotto had been a modest fifth behind Tower Of London at Meydan.
RALLY COULD RETURN TO FORM
⭕ 2.25 Newbury (6f Listed) Queen Mary runner-up and Super Sprint second at Newbury, the Kodiac filly Relief Rally failed to stay the 7f of the Fred Darling.
Tom Marquand, who had a troubled run in that Classic trial, is otherwise in top form and will be anxious to prove that she is in the same class as Adaay and Tiber Flow, winners of this for William Haggas.
Also short of room in his Spring trial, the Greenham, Mister Sketch – Mill Reef runner-up last term – cannot be overlooked with Eve Johnson Houghton claiming the fillies’ Listed at York yesterday with Betty Clover.
BETDAQ value 4.7 Relief Rally, 8.4 Mister Sketch
BOTTI ON FIRE FOR NEWMARKET
⭕ 2.40 Newmarket (7f handicap) Marco Botti has three chances at Newmarket today, two in the 4.25 handicap and the consistent Rainbow Fire in this, the one for early money, quickly second favourite with bookies last night.
Also strongly supported was Quinault, who raced through the ranks last year, with six wins in a row taking him from 59 to 97 in the ratings before a late-season strike at Ascot bettered even that.
BETDAQ value 8.1 Rainbow Fire, 9.4 Quinault
COMMAND: NOW DO A SERPENTINE!
⭕ 3.00 Newbury (London Gold Cup) Aidan O’Brien, last year’s winner with Unbelievable on only his third start, has the more experienced Chantilly favourite for this, with one proviso: the ground.
Chantilly’s entire career since the debut has been on heavy. On a drying day, the heavy-ground form needs translating to the good side over the same trip.
The brother to Iowa looks as though he needs further than this, so it will be interesting to see how Ryan Moore rides him. I would suggest he’ll be made plenty use of.
But there’s a pace horse in the race, Fighter Command, whose make-all tactics that won at Windsor for him are in his blood. His dam is sister to runaway Derby winner, Serpentine.
King’s Gambit looked as if the trip was needed when he ran second on the course in the Haynes, Hanson and Clark in September.
The Chantilly team should know his worth, since the winner of that September race ran a half-length second to Capulet in the Dee Stakes earlier this month.
BETDAQ value 5.6 Chantilly, 14.5 Fighter Command
INSPIRAL CAN BREAK BIG ROCK
⭕ 3.35 Newbury (Lockinge Stakes) Favourites are five out of six, all four-year-olds, all trained by the usual suspects: O’Brien, Gosden, Haggas and Appleby.
But only Team Gosden of that high echelon tilts at the £226k prize this afternoon, with their best and obvious chance, Inspiral.
The nine-times winner finished last season with, consecutively, the Jacques Le Marois, British Champion Fillies And Mares and the Breeders Cup Filly And Mare. Of the same generation, Poker Face also landed a late-season hat-trick but is 7lb wrong with Inspiral today.
From last year’s Classic generation, Charyn – second in the Greenham here last April – has won the Doncaster Mile and beaten Poker Face in the Sandown Mile, both on the soft this Spring.
Big Rock was never out of the first two in eight starts for Christopher Head last year, including second to the majestic Ace Impact in the French Derby and to Inspiral in the Jacques le Marois.
Big Rock was getting 3lb (as a three-year-old) from Inspiral that day but now has to give her 3lb mare’s allowance. He has changed stables for this term but will still be ridden by Aurelien Lemaitre.
He is now Maurizio Guarnieri’s first runner in England and would be only his sixth winner of the French season from 92 starters, according to France Galop. Lemaitre is 12th in the jockeys’ table on 28.
