PREVIEW
Stuart Pearce’s Great Britain, playing in their first Olympic football tournament since 1960, had seemingly made a pretty poor start as a team. Having been beaten in a special behind-closed-doors warm-up against Mexico, they were crushed by Brazil 2-0 in a friendly and then limped to a 1-1 draw versus the physical African outsiders, Senegal, in their Group A opener.
That result actually looks a lot better than it did last week as Senegal went on to record a surprise 2-0 win over group favourites Uruguay on Sunday. Considering the South Americans were many people’s fancy for the competition outright, that result has shaken up the markets and left Group A wide open.
Britain know a draw will see them through to the next round, while a good win would give them the chance to top the group. Uruguay haven’t really impressed so far, stumbling past the spirited UAE from a goal down and then getting thoroughly outmuscled by Senegal.
Luis Suarez and company need to win to ensure their progress so tonight’s clash is set to be a very competitive affair. British midfielder Tom Cleverly believes the Uruguayan trio of Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Gaston Ramirez are the three players that need to be watched tonight and coach Pearce maintains Uruguay are favourites.
The market on BETDAQ doesn’t agree, with Britain marginally shorter in the betting. However, in all honesty it looks like a coin flip but, with no side wanting to play their hand too early and risk elimination, the draw looks a little on the big side at 3.45.
