PREVIEW
It’s not often two major tournaments are held at the famous All England Wimbledon club twice within a month but, following on from Wimbledon, the Olympic tennis is entering the business end, with all four women’s quarter-finals set to be concluded today.

The battle between two former world number ones, Belgian Kim Clijsters and Russian Maria Sharapova, is arguably the most competitive tie. Clijsters took care of Ana Ivanovic in straight sets yesterday, registering her seventh successive win over the Serbian, also a former world number one. She has yet to drop a set this competition, confirming the four-time Grand Slam champion to be in good heart.

Current world number three, Maria Sharapova, had to dig deep to see off the challenge of British teenager Laura Robson on Tuesday. Inspired by the home crowd, Robson put up a tremendous display against a player ranked almost one hundred places above her, and was just edged out in two sets, 7-6 6-3. Then yesterday the useful German Sabine Lisicki took Sharapova to three sets, suggesting she is not in top form.

Neither player has played in an Olympics before and with Clijsters set to retire from the sport once more at the end of the year she knows she will not have another chance to take home an Olympic medal. Sharapova missed Beijing through injury and will be eager to complete the Career Golden Slam – all four Slam titles and Olympic gold.

Clijsters boasts a superior head-to-head record, has had a comfortable route to the last eight and considering Sharapova’s struggle to beat Robson and Lisicki, there is every reason to think this match will go the distance.
