Euro 2012 and the Olympic Games have ensured a continuous supply of top notch football this summer and less than 24 hours after gold was awarded at Wembley, the Community Shield takes place this afternoon.
The traditional campaign curtain raiser is a little out of place, with Villa Park this year’s venue – but it should be an intriguing clash between Premier League champions Manchester City and FA Cup holders Chelsea ahead of the nine-month battle ahead. Remarkably it is the first game between the two sides outside of the league since City beat Chelsea in the 1993 League Cup.
Both teams will expect to be there or thereabouts in May and, even though losing this contest to Manchester United a year ago didn’t do City much harm in the end, victory here will be keenly sought.
Goals have been in regular supply in the Community Shield in recent times – 13 have flown in over the last three years, with late goals becoming a feature after United scored a goal in injury for the third year running last term.
It’s difficult to split the two and rather than backing City at 2.31 or the Blues at 3.35 on the Daq, it could be worth anticipating another open encounter, with over 3.5 goals on offer at 3.3.
