PREVIEW
Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town kick off this year’s Championship tonight and it’s a huge season for the Welsh club, having suffered play-off heartache for three years running. Huddersfield finished well behind the three leaders in League One but completed an epic play-off victory against Sheffield United to secure promotion and the chance to play in England’s second division for the first time in 11 years.
League Two side Northampton embarrassed Cardiff midweek by dumping last season’s runners-up out of the Capital One Cup. Malky Mackay was without eight international players and fielded a youthful side, which can in part explain that poor loss, but it was still hardly the ideal preparation for what looks set to be an extremely competitive league campaign.
Huddersfield didn’t fare much better in midweek, losing to Preston North End 2-0. But Jordan Rhodes will return to lead the line for the Terriers following his midweek goalscoring exploits for Scotland in their 3-1 win over Australia. He has reported back fully-fit, while manager Simon Grayson has only one injury concern with winger Danny Ward.
The first round of league matches in any division is always a nightmare to call in terms of a result and, while Cardiff deserve to be favourites, they don’t make much appeal at 1.79 on BETDAQ. However, both teams to score at around 1.77 looks a fair price.
RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Back both teams to score at around 1.77 on BETDAQ: 4 points
Thursday: +5.24 points
AUGUST RETURN TO DATE: +3.68 points
