PREVIEW
England still cannot deliver on the biggest stage when it really matters but the Three Lions boast an impressive qualifying record for the major tournaments in recent years. In their 2010 World Cup qualifiers they only lost one game, taking 27 points from 30, and they netted 18 points from 24 on their way to Euro 2012. That formidable form may be one reason why England currently sit third in the world rankings – a full ten places above Brazil!
Tonight Roy Hodgson’s men take their first test on the road to Brazil 2014. They face a Moldova side who have only scored once in their last seven games and that was against fellow minnows San Marino. The Eastern Europeans have met England before in the same stage of qualifying for the 1998 World Cup. The Moldovans came up against far too much firepower in the two games losing 3-0 at home and 4-0 away.
Many will look at England’s squad and see the absence of Wayne Rooney, Andy Carroll and Ashley Young and wonder where the goals are going to come from tonight. However, Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge and Jermain Defoe, assisted by the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner, should really have no excuses in failing to see off Moldova with room to spare.
It’s impossible to see Moldova’s attack threatening the England defence and, while their opponents may take a while to break down, once that first goal goes in England should really cruise to a comfortable win. There’s nothing to be gained by lumping on England at a short price so a small bet on the correct score will give us a nice return should the goals flow.
