SEA HORSE LOOKS SWELL

ā• 2.35 Ascot (Sagaro Stakes): Stradivarius won this after his Gold Cup treble and Coltrane took it twice but after his Doncaster Cup. So it hardly lives up to its billing as a ā€˜Gold Cup trial’.

Caballo De Mar beat Coltrane in the Cadran in October, so has a Group-1 penalty. But, after eight victories and a ratings rise of three and a half stone, he was second in the Dubai Gold Cup recently. Today is only Group-3 level.

Trips from 1m 6f to 2m 4f and ground from good to firm to very soft have all come alike to the ā€˜sea horse.’ Value at 7.0 on BETDAQ this morning.

Ascending goes well first time out but the Ascot Stakes winning handicapper rated around a stone below the principals must improve at the age of seven.

Gold Cup placed Sweet William, another Doncaster Cup winner, has always needed a run back and a drop of rain.

But Tabletalk and Frankel’s gelded Melrose winner Tarriance were placed behind Yorkshire Cup entry Sons and Lovers in a Ā£1m Riadh handicap in February.

OBJECTOR’S ROYAL TARGET

ā• 2.55 Newmarket: Low stalls (2, 3, 4) have won six years out of seven down this Rowley Mile, and last season they finished in that order: 2-3-4!

Charlie Appleby has won the race three times in nine years and today fields one of Godolphin’s superbreed, by Wootton Bassett out of a Dubawi mare. That’s Fort Rock (out of 4).

William Buick is at Ascot for the royal-meeting trials so apprentice Connor Planas steps into the limelight here. In fact, he has yet to ride a winner at either Ascot or Newmarket!

If I were in his (riding) boots, I would worry about the words of trainer George Scott (4-11) about Objector out of stall 2: ā€˜I’m working backwards from a Royal Ascot handicap with this one.’ Looks big at 13.0 on Betdaq Betting Exchange (3.3 a place).

Michael Bell, previous winner of this (2017) with a 14-1 shot, would also worry me with Royal Bodyguard, who sneaks in under Silvestre De Sousa with 8st 4lb. Comic Hero (Oisin Murphy) carries 8st 11lb and likes fast ground.

GOSDEN’S MASTER STROKE

ā• 3.30 Newmarket (Jockey Club Stakes): Irish Derby runner-up and St Leger third, ā€˜the most disappointing horse in training,’ Sunway won a race at Meydan in January after gelding and is Ā£711k to the good!

After a sequence of seconds, Bay City Roller also turned the corner this winter with a Group 1 at Munich on the soft.

Lion’s Pride is a CD winner on firm (holds Eyon) since being gelded but he, too, is generally disappointing. Park Hill winner, Santorini Star, who likes cut in the ground, is likely to front-run.

So I’ll stay with the Caballo De Mar form and French Master, who beat him last June and has sinceĀ“been gelded. Team Gosden is currently 10-34. BETDAQ 4.6 taken.

ELARAK FIT TO MAKE ALL

ā• 4.05 Newmarket: Andrew Balding has won this twice since 2022 with sub-9st runners but Golden Redemption has won only his maiden, always a bad sign.

Elarak took a similar race here in September, making virtually all. Went up to Thirsk for his run back three weeks ago
