BLUSH BEST FOR BULL’S-EYE
⭕ 1.15 Haydock (Swinton Hurdle) The way our new champion Jumps trainer, Dan Skelton, won the fillies’ juvenile at Sandown in April with a lightweight off 10st 5lb ridden by Tristan Durrell, is a possible clue to the Swinton.
Stablemate Made U Blush was beaten only half a length under Harry Skelton, giving 16lb, and the third had won the Grade-2 Adonis at Kempton.
Now here’s Made U Blush (BETDAQ 12.5 this morning) as the one with the light weight – only 10st 2lb.- and ridden by Tristan, getting 18lb from Harry on Tellherthename (first-time hood).
After a low-level hat-trick, Indemnity ran second to the Kingwell and Greatwood winner Alexei at Ascot in November then third in the Gerry Feilden. Recently went clear in the Grade-3 Sussex Champion Hurdle (Hamlet’s Night 5th).
Indemnity may still be improving but Hamlet’s Night, who had a run on the Flat recently, is 12lb better off. Beaten a neck by Rubaud in the Elite Hurdle before that one ran up to Alexei in the Kingwell.
Helnwein is eight now but ran second in the Greatwood and Alan King’s stable has been in fine form.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 10 Indemnity, 12.5 Made U Blush, 17 Hamlet’s Night
MAHO DERBY TRIAL CREAM
⭕ 1.58 Lingfield (Derby Trial) The Huxley Stakes yesterday gave Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore 12 consecutive Chester winners. As a dual Derby hero, Lambourn was an incredible SP at 6-4 against.
The last time at Chester we had an odds-against Ballydoyle winner of the Lingfield Derby trial, we didn’t know what we’d got. We let Anthony Van Dyck start at 2-1; then we let him win at Epsom at 13-2.
Just as he had been beaten three times after taking the Curragh Futurity, so today Isaac Newton also has to redeem three consecutive defeats.
All today’s trialists are entered in the Derby, for which O’Brien currently has the first five in the betting: Benvenuto Cellini, Constitution River, Pierre Bonnard, Hawk Mountain and Christmas Day, who is favourite for the Dante next Thursday.
One of the squad, Amadeus Mozart, met defeat by Maho Bay at Newmarket, and I will hope Charlie Appleby’s colt can do a rare trials double and beat Isaac Newton today; otherwise the Epsom ‘race’ will become a Ballydoyle stable gallop.
HOT SHOT AT BETDAQ 33-1
⭕ 2.20 Ascot (Victoria Cup) DRAW: middle to high (last 11 years) 25, 23, 29, 18, 13, 10, 24, 27, 2, 12, 11.
Mudbir looks a standout at the front of the market, which otherwise seems weak with Defence Minister (1) and Shiplake (3) in bogey low stalls, and last year’s winner, Hickory, now 10lb higher and badly off with the 2024 winner, The Wizard Of Eye (26), to whom he was fourth.
Mudbir stepped up to this level with three wins from four, then was blocked in his run at Goodwood and, with the black marks against those around him, is value at around 5-1 out of gate 19.
Tribal Chief (22) was unlucky in the Lincoln but has never won at today’s specialist 7f, which also applies to Shafdar (15).
First-time visor may boost Great Acclaim (12). Finished in rear in the Lincoln, but has had eight 7f races and finished in the first four in every one.
Expected to improve for the step up in trip and first-time cheekpieces is So Darn Hot (14) so that I have a 1-2-3 of:
Betdaq Betting Exchange 6.2 Mudbir, 9.2 Great Acclaim, 34 So Darn Hot.
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS..
⭕ 2.55 Ascot The strong finish of both Valedictory and Bulletin when Newbury second and third over 10 furlongs in April recommended them for today’s step up to 1m 4f.
But first-time winner last year Opportunity and Al Wasl Storm, who ran in the Derby and the Queens Vase, both have low draws and the word is the Frankel colt, Opportunity.
⭕ 3.40 Haydock Lake Forest has earned double Lambourn’s money! He went to Rosehill and slammed French ace Lazzat in the £2.8m Golden Eagle.
That Rosehill triumph came after a break, and this Listed at Haydock first run back looks a gift before his Group-1 target (Queen Anne or Jubilee) at Royal Ascot.
