THE WEEK LONG GALWAY FESTIVAL STARTS HERE: Take a deep breath, relax, and get ready for seven days of racing from Galway. SHAMROCK marks your card for each and every race this week.

Stamina is needed, not to mention a few winners (probably from Dermot Weld) to survive this week’s Galway Festival which gets underway at 5.10 this afternoon.

It’s a seven day extravaganza of flat and jumps racing on the West Coast of Ireland.

Here goes……

5:10 Galwaybayhotel.com & Radissonhotelgalway.com Novice Hurdle (4yo, 2m, 13 runners)

The Weld stable have a good record in the opener and will be looking to start the meeting as they mean to go on with Diplomat who won with plnety more in hand than the length winning margin suggested when landing the odds at Sligo last time out. The runner-up has since won well and for many Diplomat will be the day one banker to give Weld his 6th winner from the last 10 runnings of this.

SELECTION: Diplomat (NAP)

5:40 Sean ‘The Budgie’ Burgess Memorial Handicap Hurdle (81-123) (4yo+, 2m, 23 runners)

Really tricky handicap hurdle. The play might be Admiral Hawke, win and place. He ran well on handicap debut at Gowran Park when second and can benefit from another positive ride today. Expect him to be prominent during the race and hopefully having enough in hand to hang on for a place.

SELECTION: Admiral Hawke (WIN and PLACE)

6:10 claregalwayhotel.ie (C & G) E.B.F. Maiden (2yo, 7f, 7 runners)

Look no further than Weld and O’Brien here. They have won the last seven renewals of this between them and their runners dominate the market for this, the first flat race of the Galway Festival. Preference is for Mustajeeb who was very much in need of the run on debut at the Curragh when fourth to Sir John Hawkins.

SELECTION: Mustajeeb

6:45 Connacht Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap (70-100) (4yo+, 2m, 23 runners)

There might be value here in the Willie Mullins second string Digeanta who is unbeaten in four career starts – none of the wins have been more than a length ! He makes his handicap debut here and looks big at around 16 on BETDAQ.

SELECTION: Digeanta (WIN and PLACE)

7:15 Claytonhotelgalway.ie Handicap (50-75) (3yo, 7f, 16 runners)

A low draw is important here and Rock On Coco (drawn 2) looks of interest after a good fourth at Gowran Park last time out. She appeals as a win and place bet.

SELECTION: Rock On Coco (WIN and PLACE)

7:45 Galway Oyster Hotel Handicap (60-90) (3yo, 1m 4f, 9 runners)

Could easily be another for Weld here with Pat Day Kitten who bids for a hat-trick after wins at Naas and Tipperary.

SELECTION: Pay Day Kitten

8:15 pillohotelgalway.com Flat Race (4-7yo, 2m, 23 runners)

Wicklow Brave from the Mullins yard ran a much better race at Punchestown last time showing significant improvement on his debut run. He looks a leading contender here.

SELECTION: Wicklow Brave

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
5.10 Diplomat (NAP)
5.40 Admiral Hawke (WIN and PLACE)
6.10 Mustajeeb
6.45 Digeanta (WIN and PLACE)
