DAQMAN’S BIG-RACE TOP TEN: Daqman goes racing ahead today, naming the horses he thinks likely to win from York next week right through to the Arc at Longchamp in October. His daily bets are at the foot of the column.
Tipsters only tell you about their winners. That’s the old accusation to which a tipster ought to reply: yes, and the punters I’ve heard bragging about their near-misses tells me all I need to know about why they are not winning money.
But this tipster tries to tell you about his winners and his losers. And the current Daqman ante-post betting book is the perfect scenario.
YOU WIN SOME: I could not be happier with my Arc de Triomphe BETDAQ bet on Novellist at 24.0. Yes! He’s now around 5-1 favourite across the board.
YOU LOSE SOME: I sorted (hardly the right word in the circumstances) a St Leger ante-post bet: Brass Ring. Looks like being out for the rest of the season.
But, heh, there’s another from his stable has been doing well, and is bags better on BETDAQ than with the bookmakers. So, if you Feel Like Dancing….
BROXBOURNE (Cesarewitch) You wouldn’t take much out of a Shergar Cup meeting, where Mr Opportunist Mark Johnston cleaned up, despite a day of riding howlers, particularly by the foreign riders.
Principal among them was the international set’s failure to understand a good old English two-mile handicap: Lisa Allpress on Broxbourne and Yasunari Iwata on Brockwell were stone cold most of the way, making late progress to finish 6th and 7th.
In fact, the whole caboodle of jockeys, other than the enterprising Kieren Fallon on the winner, Homeric, should have been before the stewards for acting out a farce instead of being at the races, witness the time of the (non) event, an astonishing ‘slow by 8.27secs’. Official.
I’d forget the form if I were you, but be glad that it might help Broxbourne, the roaring Goodwood Stakes winner, be a bigger price for the Cesarewitch in the autumn.
An indication of the topsy-turvy nature of the form can be gleaned from a CD race, the Brown Jack Stakes, at Ascot a fortnight earlier when Broxbourne won, three-and-a-half-lengths clear of Homeric.
ERNEST HEMINGWAY (Irish St Leger) He’s been seen only in small fields but he took on, and beat, the Meld Stakes winner, Scintilulla, at a difference of a stone, weight for age plus penalties. The Irish St leger beckons.
FEEL LIKE DANCING (Doncaster St Leger) ‘He’s learning all the time,’ said John Gosden, nominating for his rest–of-the-season programme the Great Voltigeur next week, then the St Leger (45.0 on BETDAQ but 14.0 with Corals, 16.0 elsewhere).
That was after Feel Like Dancing, the Queens Vase runner-up, won a Group-3 on the July Course last month. Worth a pound at those offers.
NOVELLIST (Arc De Triomphe) This column has such a big price about Novellist (24.0 to win 40 points) that some of you will be tempted to lay off already with only around 5-1 available now, but I think he could be even shorter when his King George romp over five Group-1 winners sinks in.
I went overboard afterwards and had him down as ‘the best I’ve seen since Dancing Brave’. I’ll hold on to that until I see a sensible assessment from the so-called experts, who seemed so knocked over that they had very little to say.
The way I, myself, should now be sensible is, laying off or no laying off, to find the alternative bet at big offers. In other words more value.
It’s the constant guide dog, for those of us called punters, largely blind to the inside information but willing to venture into the market traffic with our hard-earned. Watch this space, though it may be a case of waiting until race day to be layer or backer
SLADE POWER (Nunthorpe) Offers of 23.0 on BETDAQ last night, and 15.5 this morning, despite his being crunched to 10-1 with Hilliam Will after a storming Phoenix Sprint win at The Curragh yesterday.
TORONADO and OLYMPIC GLORY (Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes, Prix Du Moulin) The QE 11 looks like a cruise for the Hannon team, with Toronado the favourite, after his Goodwood blitz of Dawn Approach, but now joined by Olympic Glory, aft er he ran Moonlight Cloud to a nostril in a fabulous Jacques Le Marois yesterday.
The front two had ‘Dawn’ sunk below the horizon, albeit his having had a hard race at Goodwood. Will Hannon run Toronado and Olympic Glory together? It’s like winding back the clock to Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin!
TRADING LEATHER (International) My view of Novellist is partly judged on his five-lengths King George runaway from Trading Leather, the Irish Derby winner.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say: don’t dismiss Trading Leather for a race like the International – Al Kazeem or no – on the strength of that Derby since it was run fabulously ‘fast by 4.83secs.’
INTELLO (Champion Stakes) Similarly, though Moonlight Cloud’s turn of foot was too potent for Intello over a mile at Deauville yesterday, the French Derby winner is still the one to beat at 1m 2f.
WILD COCO (Yorkshire Oaks) I backed Elik on the morning of the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood but the BETDAQ market warned me of the error of my ways.
Wild Coco, backed in to 5-6 favourite at SP, took the race apart and left Elik two-and-a-half lengths runner-up, despite conceding 13lb.
