SHAMROCK LANDS 7/2 WINNING NAP: It was a classic day for SHAMROCK on Saturday when he napped Leading Light WON 7/2 in the St Leger at Doncaster. Now for the Irish St Leger at the Curragh.
It was my third winning nap of the week (from five naps) and the best price of all. Delighted with Leading Light who (even allowing for my bias) was an excellent winner.
It was a success that helped make up for Camelot’s heartbreaking defeat in the race last year when he was bidding for the Triple Crown.
“You can never be confident about winning a Classic,” said part-owner John Magnier. “However we do hold him in high regard and even this morning Aidan was talking about possibly going to the Arc with him. He’s not in the race so we’d have to supplement him.
“The sole reason he ran in the Queen’s Vase was that we had so many so horses with a lot of options that we had to shuffle the pack. It just so happened that he ended up there – but he’s a classy horse.”
And news on Camelot….. Coolmore stud tweeted: “Camelot will not run in the Prix Foy today as the ground has gone too soft. We hope to work him after racing this afternoon at the Curragh.”
Three Group races in a row at the Curragh today.
3:15 Manguard Plus Solonaway Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m, 10 runners)
Famous Name was long odds-on when winning this race last year but it looks a more competitive renewal. Darwin has won both his starts since arriving from the States and his defeat of Gordon Lord Byron was made to look even better when that one went on to win the Sprint Cup at Haydock. Darwin looks really hard to oppose.
3:50 GAIN Irish St. Leger (Group 1) (3yo+, Class 1, 1m 6f, 10 runners)
Last year’s winner Royal Diamond renews rivalry with Ernest Hemingway in a wide open renewal of the race. Pale Mimosa already has winning form over the distance and can make a winning return following a 100 day break and win it for Dermot Weld whose Vinnie Roe who this for a remarkable four consecutive times.
4:25 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (Group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 7f, 6 runners)
I might have got this badly wrong but I don’t understand why Toormore is favourite over Sudirman at the time of writing. For me Sudirman has acheived far more – and already won a Group 1 – the Phoenix Stakes – and is napped to beat the English raider who is unbeaten after wins at Leicester and Goodwood.
SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Sudirman (4.25 Curragh)
NEXT BEST: Darwin (3.15 Curragh)
WIN: Pale Vimosa (3.50 Curragh)
