IT’S SIX NAPS OUT OF EIGHT: Mr Singh (WON 11-10) landed the very first race at the Newmarket July Meeting as Daqman’s sixth winning nap in the last eight days, and his second successful banker in that time. The six are:

WON 4-5 Birdman
WON 9-4 Riflescope
WON 4-9 Golden Horn (banker)
WON 1-1 Almodovar
WON 7-4 Lilian Baylis
WON 11-10 Mr Singh (banker)

LAYS GO SEVEN ON THE TROT: Daqman dared to attack the talking horse Mahsoob, and the one-time hot favourite weakened in the market near the off and finished out of the frame. His last seven lays are:

WON (place lay) Collaboration (unplaced 8-1)
WON (win lay) Telescope (unplaced 6-4 fav)
WON (win lay) Wicklow Brave (unplaced 5-4 fav)
WON (win lay) Cenotaph (3rd 15-8 fav)
WON (place lay) Speed Check (unplaced 6-1)
WON (win lay) Amazing Speed (2nd 4-9 fav)
WON (win lay) Mahsoob (unplaced 5-2 fav)

49 WINS AGAINST PRICEWISE: The lay against Mahsoob was winning bet number 49 in races selected this season by Pricewise. Daqman now leads 49-9 (overall 190-82). Will Daqman know where the value is today? Find out as they clash in the 2,40, 3.15 and 3.45 Newmarket, and the 2.55 at York.

ILLUMINATE NAPPED TO LIGHT UP NEWMARKET

2.40 Newmarket (Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes) There have been SPs of 12-1, 14-1 (twice) and 20-1 in the decade, yet most winners – four from the Albany and two from the Queen Mary – have come from Royal Ascot.

Of the Queen Mary placed horses, Besharah (third) looked the one most likely to appreciate an extra furlong and could overtake the runner-up, Easton Angel, and confirm the form with those behind, Kurland, Rah Rah and Silk Bow.

But Illuminate came with such a telling late run from off the pace on the wide outside in the Albany, needing all of the 6f, and ran away from them in the closing stages.

Besharah is very easy to back at 8.0 this morning, as Easton Angel and Illuminate start the day joint favourites, well clear of the field on 2.8. If there’s a surprise it could be Blue Bayou (21.0).

I shall attempt another double whammy, opposing Easton Angel with Illuminate, and try to make it a triple whammy with a place bet on Blue Bayou. Three returns from the same race?

3.15 Newmarket (Falmouth Stakes) Integral (withdrawn this morning) trailed in behind Amazing Maria at Ascot this time around. She clearly didn’t run her race and Amazing Maria still has to step up if she is to cope with this Group-1 level.

Avenir Certain won both French 1,00 Guineas and Oaks last year (form of neither race worked out well) but has been headstrong this term. Christophe Soumillion, so superlative on Ervedya in the Coronation Stakes, could make a difference, and she could still be best of the triple French raid.

But three-year-olds have the best record in this and that Coronation usually provides the clue to this race, with the 1,000 Guineas next best. Lucida was placed in both, and Kevin Manning has his chance to make it third time lucky.

She had to be switched before taking over the 1,000 Guineas field, only to be pipped in the final strides, and she got going too late when the Coronation field was mugged by Soumillion on Ervedya, trained – like Avenir Certain – by Jean-Claude Rouget.

3.45 Newmarket There’s pace on either side of what is likely to be a split from the stalls. Indescribable should take them along from the one-stall, though there were rumours that he’d wait for a race tomorrow.

Almost adjacent in stall 4, another strong puller, Grandad’s World, has Richard Hughes to keep him under control. He’s improved with every race but may need some cut and was well behind Hayley Turner’s mount, Steve Prescott, on the Rowley course here on firm in May. Mukhmal won well there around the same time.

Squats (stall 14) has raced the last twice as if today’s trip on top of the ground would suit. But the jockey change on Magical Memory catches my eye.

Magical Memory, who split Grandad’s World and Squats at York when well out of his ground for most of the race, was ridden by Martin Harley that day.

Ryan Moore, who won on him when it was firm ground at Leicester, was booked but is stood down and Frankie Dettori takes the ride, with the handicapper’s view that the Zebedee grey has improved 9lb since the Spring. Boing!

4.55 Newmarket (Silver Bunbury Cup) The 3.45 sprint should have given us a clue to any draw bias for this first running of a consolation race for tomorrow’s Bunbury Cup.

What normally applies in these consolations is that those who’ve just missed the cut from the race proper and are high in the weights here are the ‘ones most likely to.’

Mr Win looks well handicapped now with old rivals Fiftyshadesofgrey (the whips are out) and Buckstay. Foxtrot Romeo is hard to win with and Amazour may need an easier surface.

DROP TO GROUP 3 IS SUMMER PROVIDENCE

2.55 York (Summer Stakes) Three-year-old fillies were five out of six in this until failing as favourites in all of the last three seasons. This is reckoned a good year for the Classic generation: can they get back on track here?

Royal Razalma won the Cornwallis last season but the form hasn’t really worked out. Pastoral Girl has lost her way after beating Osaila in the Princess Margaret but was back to form – though unfancied at 50-1 – when splitting Newsletter and Lastuce on the soft at Nottingham in May.

The York ground may have dried out too much for all bar New Providence, second in the Nell Gwyn to Osaila but overfaced since. Kiyoshi was behind New Providence (6.6 on BETDAQ as I write) at Lingfield in May.

A line through Lastuce suggests that the morning favourite, Wokingham winner, Interception, takes care of the rest of the runners in this Group 3.
