4-1 DAQMAN’S IN THE BLACK: Daqman ended the evening at Sandown with back-to-back winners yesterday, bringing in just under 20 points profit on the day overall. The winners were:

WON 4-1 Jacob Black
WON 11-4 Consort

BIG-RACE CLUES ROUND-UP: Today Daqman offers another clue to the Derby, plus a look at Treve’s comeback race, the day’s card at Newmarket and a tip for an Irish raider at the Stratford hunter-chase championships.

BREEDING PUTS HOLBEIN IN THE DERBY PICTURE

Hans Holbein has the Derby provenance. He travelled very well round the bends of Chester and he and Gleneagles are the only Ballydoyle colts to have gone forward every race.

Therein lies another battle: Hans Holbein is by Montjeu and Gleneagles by Galileo. Montjeu leads Galileo 4-3 as the winningmost Epsom Derby sire in the decade.

Hans Holbein is Montjeu’s sole represent on June 6, but Galileo also has Giovanni Canaletto and Rocky Rider in the potential line-up.

Two other probables on Saturday week – Golden Horn (by Cape Cross) and Rogue Runner (King’s Best) – are also by sires of the Derby winner in the last 10 seasons.

WE ARE OUT TO LAY TREVE ON HER COMEBACK

2.20 Saint-Cloud (Prix Corrida) It is to be hoped that dual Arc winner Treve stays sound this year and today may set her up for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud but she can be opposed in her Corrida comeback on four counts against her.

She took an absolute age to get going last year with several setbacks – failing to score in three starts before the Arc – and will not be punished on her reappearance.

The Arc is again her target and that’s a whole summer away in October. It’s nearly two years since she won over 10 furlongs and needs further nowadays.

On only two occasions since the Corrida was established in 1979 has the race been won by an older horse: 34 times in 36 years, it has gone to a four-year-old.

We Are should win it en route to the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Bogged down in the Longchamp mud in the Ganay on his reappearance, he finished first past the post four times out of five last term, including winning the Opera on Arc day (going good).

LEADERENE CAN LAUNCH RYAN MOORE DOUBLE

2.30 Newmarket Older horses of six and eight are very unlikely to beat the four-year-olds, represented here by Ryan Moore’s ride, Leaderene, who has been beaten by colts on her two runs back and won four out of five last summer.

Venus Grace and Kalon Brama have been kept to a mile thus far and, when She’s Gorgeous has ventured beyond the mile, she has twice been out of the frame over 10 furlongs.

3.35 Newmarket The Galileo filly Libbard has been working well and may be good enough to beat the colts, getting 5lb sex allowance.

Libbard was a long way from the finished article when she had three winners in front of her and two behind in a hot as hot maiden at Doncaster, won by a stablemate who is now in line for the Oaks.

Excellent Team, Haalan and, particularly, Horseshoe Bay should all come on for the step up in trip, so it’s not a hand from which to play your picture cards.

4.10 Newmarket With Sir Michael Stoute striking at better than 40%, one professional punter I know thinks that the day’s best bet is Horseshoe Bay and Peterhof in this one, stop at a winner.

The Royal Ascot Derby (King Edward V11) could feature both Peterhof and Space Age. Both have had a run back and must win this today to figure at the royal meeting.

On breeding, and on the way they have performed so far, I fancy Peterhof (Ryan Moore again) today over this quarter mile shorter trip.

IRISH RAIDER LORD FINGAL IS ONE FOR THE FUTURE

4.45 Newcastle I was hoping that, particularly with 7-1 and 10-1 paper forecasts this morning, I could get a price about Pudding, whom I’m told has been working well.

But 5.7 was the best in the BETDAQ orange (less with the bookies) about this first-time handicapper, trained by Lady Cecil, whose string has just hit form.

Pudding had two engagements in the South this weekend but takes this long, solo haul to Newcastle instead.

6.55 Stratford With heavy rain forecast for Haydock, I’m swerving the meeting for a bet at the Stratford championship session tonight.

Jim Dreaper is talking up his hunter-chase sequence winner, Lord Fingal, for decent handicaps later in the year.
