5-1 NAP IN FILLIES’ ST LEGER: After two winners on the opening day, Daqman landed a super nap at Doncaster yesterday with Gretchen (WON 5-1) in the ‘fillies’ St Leger’, the Park Hill Stakes, in which he rejected the gambled-on Koora (unplaced).

THE REAL THING TOMORROW: Look out tomorrow for the real thing, the St Leger, final Classic of the season. The Daqman v Pricewise score remains on 81-13, as they clash again today in the 1.55, 2.30 and 3.05 Doncaster

BE A FRANKIE ’FAN’ IN THE FLYING CHILDERS

1.55 Doncaster (Flying Childers Stakes): Winners of this have already raced at Group level, which weeds out Ornate, Love On The Rocks and Shadow Hunter, and reduced the 109 total percentage to a super-friendly 100-85 BETDAQ orange this morning.

Ger Lyons (only 1-32 in England in four seasons) is right out of form at home, his recent runners starting 9-1, 14-1 (twice), 16-1 and 20-1 after three consecutive losing favourites for the stable.

That takes the edge off Bear Cheek’s challenge to Gutaifan, the Robert Papin winner and Prix Morny runner-up, ridden as at Maisons by Frankie Dettori.

In fact, David Wachman takes on Bear Cheek again with Independence Day after their one-two in the Curragh Stakes, when Independence Day got the worst of it. Frankie for me!

BATTERSEA STABLE HAS JUST HIT TOP FORM

2.30 Doncaster (Ladbrokes Mallard Stakes) They win this any age, any weight.. and sometimes any price you like!.

It’s contest number 14 of the campaign for Polarisation, which is close on the total for Forgotten Voice, Battersea, Curbyourenthusiasm, Noble Silk and Not Never combined.

Not Never, just pipped by Polarisation in the Melrose at York, is 9lb better off, but does best from the front, which will not be easy here. You could take a position expecting to trade, and find that he plays his hand differently, so he’s the enigma of the race.

A third three-year-old (they are 11300140 in this), Future Empire is a difficult ride, an expensive bridesmaid, three times beaten favourite. Doesn’t say much for one that beat him in August, Pressure Point.

Noble Silk is another with a poor strike rate. Curbyourenthusiasm is high in the weights, and Forgotten Voice hasn’t won on the Flat for more than two years.

That leaves Battersea, for a yard which has just hit form (2-3 yesterday), plus Saved By The Bell and CD-winner Royal Signaller, who needs the ground to dry out even further.

Saved By The Bell has run two cracking races recently over further but is 12lb higher than for his last success.

Battersea, who was in great form last summer, returned to the track only in July, and now looks ready to show his true ability though, with five horses in a 1.8-point parameter at the front of the market, this is a very open contest, and he’s another who doesn’t want rain.

FUN CUP BET? NO HE’S EVERY RIGHT TO WIN

3.05 Doncaster Cup It’s even tighter at the top: just one point covered six horses at the front of a 104% BETDAQ orange this morning. That they are much of a muchness is easily revealed.

The Lonsdale Cup is the traditional guide to the race but there’s nothing of that ilk running today; 110 and 112 are common winning ratings, but again this field falls short (by four or five lengths).

And with three horses aged eight and one that’s nine, the overall concensus must be that a young improver will win it.

Step forward Fun Mac, a 7.4 offer and an 18lb better animal than when he beat William Of Orange at Salisbury in May, with any hiccups in his rise all down to soft ground. William of Orange, incidentally, is up only 7lb.

Fun Mac’s ‘moral victory’ in the Ascot Stakes – beaten half a length by Clondaw Warrior, giving 7lb – gives him every right to win today, if the going remains on top.

Pallasator has been a big disappointment, dropped 3lb since the start of the year, and it’s Seamour who’s done best of the rest, twice a winner in his last three starts.

But a line through Suegioo suggests that he has to find more in this, and he would have been more at home in a handicap for the Mallard.

PURE FREAK OR DOES ROCKS LIE IN HER PATH?

3.40 Doncaster (May Hill Stakes) Two to four runs, already sporting a Group-3 win or place. That’s how the stats see the winner of this.

That would have to be Light Up The World, Marenko or Turret Rocks, but (there’s always a ‘but’, isn’t there) how good is Pure Diamond?

Godolphin have won this four times in the last five years with one trainer or another, and Pure Diamond coasted home six lengths at Kempton from a horse that had previously won nine lengths, albeit both races were maidens.

Marenko, Midnight Crossing and Opal Tiara are not bred with the stamina for this, whereas Gypsy Eyes is built to go round again, and is the apple of Charlie Hills’ eye.

Pure Diamond might be a freak but, at the offers in a value 103% BETDAQ orange, I took 7.8 Gypsy Eyes and 6.4 Turret Rocks, whose family goes back to the fabulous Goldikova on the dam’s side.

Placed in a Group-3, running on, the daughter of Fastnet Rock (sire of Diamondsandrubies and Qualify) stepped up to get within three lengths of Ballydoyle in a Group 2 on the last day. Both races were over 7f and, in both, she promised even better at a mile, the distance of her maiden win earlier.

Ballydoyle had hammered yesterday’s easy Donny winner, Nemoralia, and should give a good account in Sunday’s Moyglare at The Curragh.

With Gypsy Eyes on my side as well, I could get a better price two runners than for a single bet on Pure Diamond. That’s one way to spend BETDAQ value!
