DAQMAN TODAY ON TWO CONTINENTS: After a winner a day for Daqman every day since last Saturday, he is back to his weekend treats with the Marathon at Sandown this afternoon and the Belmont Derby tonight.
TOMORROW: Eclipse day at Sandown with bull’s-eye bets.
RUMBLE NUNTHORPE READY
⭕ 3.35 Sandown Getreadytorumble is from a very fast family, appropriate for a sprint handicap named after Battaash, who took no prisoners in 13 strikes, including the Kings Stand and the Nunthorpe of 2020.
Jack Channon’s three-year-old grey ’Rumble’ is on a hat-trick mission with this year’s Nunthorpe on his agenda next month.
Kassaya is the enigma. She has no fancy entries but was made favourite for the 2024 Queen Mary at Royal Ascot only to be denied a clear run repeatedly but has not been seen since.
Just as questionable is the form of another long-term absentee Jungle Drums, the Rockingham winner on soft in the autumn for Karl Burke before being gelded and switched to Jamie Osborne.
GOLD GUIDE TO WINDLORD
⭕ 4.10 Sandown This mile-and-a-quarter at Listed level should go to Colin Keane on Windlord for Juddmonte and Andrew Balding.
Checkandchallenge has put nearly £400k in the bank but is on an unlucky 13-race losing run, since winning on heavy in the autumn of 2023.
Savvy Victory has already won a Listd here but that was nearly a year ago with form of 1-15 since, the win coming on AW. The grey Cash hasn’t scored since his maiden.
Windlord blasted home in a York novice last September and has faced tall orders since, all in Group races.
The last twice he was involved until the business end in the Irish 2,000 and the St James Palace Stakes, both won by Field Of Gold.
COLTRANE’S SWAN-SONG
⭕ 4.45 Sandown The 2m Listed Marathon is down to four runners; all well exposed, with the youngest aged six.
I see it as Coltrane’s swan-song but six hours later his trainer, Andrew Balding, can land real money with New Century in the £330k Belmont Derby.
Coltrane won this in 2022 but the old warrior’s narrow Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) win last season (first-time cheekpieces) was his sole success in almost two years.
Behind Coltrane here the last day, Al Nayyir now tries cheekpieces. He’s a CD winner here and the last time he ran at this lower level, he won easily at Newmarket (but was later disqualified).
Real Dream, the Rosebery third (1m 3f) at Kempton in the Spring, cut out some of the running in a 1m 6f handicap at Royal Ascot.
This is his first try at a trip for a trainer who does well in stamina tests but Real Dream has to improve almost a stone on the ratings.
The hooded mare, Term Of Endearment, was Lily Langtry (Group-2) winner in back-to-back successes for Henry De Bromhead last year, and was favourite, beaten a head, second start for William Haggas at York the last day. Likes fast ground but well beaten over 2m at Meydan in April.
RENEWED MURPHY MAGIC
⭕ 10.45 Saratoga (Belmont Derby) The race is a re-run of the head-to-head scrap at Salisbury last August when New Century (Oisin Murphy) outgunned Luther (Kieran Shoemark). The form has worked out top class.
New Century kept on, two lengths fourth behind Henri Matisse in the Breeders Cup Juvenile.
And Luther was little more than a length behind Henri Matisse, in an Anglo-Irish finish to the French 2,000 Guineas.
But New Century loved it rock-hard firm like tonight when he won the Summer Stakes at Woodbine in September.
* Murphy will fly back for seven rides at Sandown tomorrow including Ruling Court in the Eclipse.
