DAQMAN LEADS PRICEWISE 104-40: We Are (WON 7-1) was a winner for Daqman in his private challenge to Pricewise of the Racing Post. Their winners at the weekend were: Daqman, Fractional and We Are; Pricewise, Fractional and Lightning Moon. That makes the (corrected) score 65-28 on the Flat (104-40 overall).
MAY THE BEST HORSE WIN IN FRANCE
It’s the irony of Pontefract today. That they should be running the Phil Bull Trophy the day after the Arc meeting. The Yorkshire schoolmaster turned ratings expert is digging himself out of his grave to get at the Longchamp Stewards after their Grand Criterium decision.
The disqualification of Gleneagles from the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere – known most of its life as the Grand Criterium – was wrong because Gleneagles was the best horse on the day.
Alternatively, what might have happened had the first three not all come together is only surmise. Either way, the ‘winner’; had the race taken from him unjustly.
You could argue that Gleaneagles’ leaning to the right tightened up Full Mast but Full Mast independently bumped Territories, and that’s the problem with Stewards’ guesswork as to what might have won, had each horse gone straight.
Territories might have won; at least, might well have beaten Full Mast for second. So isn’t there now a case for Territories claiming the race off the ‘winner’, Full Mast?
England used to be riddled with this kind of Stewards’ guesswork until, led by Phil Bull, a campaign on behalf of punters finally established that, unless it is absolutely clear that the winner destroyed the second’s winning run, he keeps the race. The principle is: may the best horse win.
It was a close decision on Saturday when Cirrus Des Aigles clearly swerved across and bumped Fractional, though that was almost on the line. But Gleneagles was a ‘jobsworth’ decision. French Stewards v Commonsense is an old non-starter.
BULLISH ABOUT RAIN FOR STATUTORY
PONTEFRACT: Daniel Tudhope ‘arrived’ on the international scene yesterday with a superb ride, extricating himself from a bad draw on Move In Time in the Abbaye at Longchamp.
He rides for the same burgeoning David O’Meara stable in the Phil Bull Trophy (3.40) but it would be Repeater’s first win in three years. Check out the conditions at Pontefract before having a bet.
If there has been enough rain about, which is the way it’s looking, Statutory will bid for back-to-back wins a year on from his odds-on success as a three-year-old, receiving lumps of weight.
And he’s in luck today, in that no three-year-old getting the allowances has stood his ground. The age group would have been going for a third win in five renewals.
As it is, Statutory has most to fear from firm-ground-lover Big Thunder, according to the BETDAQ market, as I write.
Big Thunder was a sequence horse for Sir Mark Prescott last season (returning 1211101) and has been waiting for the handicapper to ‘slim’ down the weight he put on. That’s happening very slowly and the ground is changing against him today.
Prescott also runs Alwilda but, like all bar the front pair, she has never won in better company than class 4. Statutory looks good.
The filly Mythical City (2.10) may give a return from a win and place investment at 7.0 early mouse on BETDAQ this morning, noted staying on stoutly at Ayr.
Ventura Castle has the experience but clearly disappointed as favourite on the last day, and a bigger threat is Oceanographer, a Sea The Stars colt.
I’ll mix my bets and back Mythical City, covering the win stake with a place bet which would also return enough to spare to double Oceanographer with Statutory at 0% commission in a Daq Multiples double.
WINDSOR: We have the same problem with the going at Windsor – how much rain, if any, will get into the ground – but, in any case, the ominously big fields and low-level fare swerve me toward the classiest race, the Reading Post Handicap (3.50).
One that catches the eye at a big price is Busatto (15.0 offers on BETDAQ), as one capable of winning on both firm and heavy terrain, dropped down in grade and having lost much of the weight imposition for a double in the Spring.
Norway Cross could come on for her August Sandown third after a long break, and Festival Theatre is in the right hands to show improvement, but very easy Yarmouth winner, Placidia, is feared most.
Hoistile Fire (5.20) returns to his best trip, back down to his winning grade, and with his winningmost jockey (Jamie Spencer 2-2) back on board. It all signals a good run and 13.0 on BETDAQ signals a good win-and-place bet!
