IRISH CHAMPIONS DAY: The Irish Arkle and Champion Hurdle are run at Leopardstown this afternoon, tempting more Daq Multiples for Daqman. But it’s another day of juggling stakes, which brought him such success on Tuesday and Saturday.

PLAY UP ON ANOTHER MULLINS BENEFIT DAY

12.50 Leopardstown Gordon Elliott’s gang of four four-year-olds are unlikely to win this, if the stats have their say: no winners of that age for seven years and that came when the older favourite fell.

There’s not much wrong with the form of Don’t Touch It. The third horse home on his penultimate second has won 13 lengths since, and he beat an odds-on favourite into third when runner-up again on the last day.

Both seconds were at the hands of Willie Mullins’ horses, but Willie reckons his contender today, Beau Mome, may need a sounder surface; he also needs to settle better.

When I’ve made a packet from Daq Multiples, I always dabble again the following day, like a jump jockey who welcomes a simple, cushioned fall to get it out of the way.

1.20 Leopardstown But why be fatalist. We may not have to wait long for another ‘good thing.’ Then another. And another. It certainly seems a day to play up our winnings.

This race is a Mullins benefit – he’s trained the last four winners – and we haven’t even reached Douvan and Faugheen yet.

The Mullins’ magic here has already been worked on A Toi Phil, who looked non-too-co-operative until consenting to battle, and go clear, on today’s course over Christmas. Will improve again here, says yer man.

Woodland Opera was 29 lengths behind a Mullins winner at the same meeting and Acapella Bourgeois had been 21 lengths off another one two days earlier.

1.55 Leopardstown (Arkle Novice Chase) Douvan exercise gallop for win number eight, consecutively. He’ll be long odds on here, and he’s short odds on for the Arkle at Cheltenham.

CASCA CAN BEAT STABLES OUT OF FORM

2.30 Leopardstown At 7.0 the field in the BETDAQ orange this morning, this handicap seems to present a huge betting challenge, though trainer form says there are only six horses in it.

Trainers of the nine others runners have, collectively, failed to land a race in 1,149 days, though you can’t be too hard on them if they’ve been running their string against W. Mullins!

The half-dozen from stables who have actually trained winners in the not-too-distant past are, at BETDAQ offers early mouse: 8.2 Eiri Na Casca, 10.5 Boher Call, 15.0 Sir Abbot, 23.0 Mr Cosmopolitan, 24.0 Pires, 31.0 I’lltakeitfromhere.

There’s not much at revised weights between Boher Call and Mr Cosmopolitan on their recent one-four at Naas.
But Eiri Na Casca, who put up a faster time over the same Naas CD, should again hold runner-up Finea.

I’lltakeitfromhere surely needs further; Pires is 12 years old now; and Sir Abbot got a damning vet’s report at Punchestown in the race which augurs well for the chance of Kate’s Benefit.

Likely favourite Rogue Trader has faced such as Douvan and Killultagh Vic – what did I tell you about running your horses against W. Mullins! – but his ‘gift’ of nearly two stone to the seven-year-old improver Eiri Na Casca looks a stopper.

FORMIDABLE FAUGHEEN FOR IRISH CHAMPION

3.05 Leopardstown (Irish Champion Hurdle) Another Willie walkover? The champion-hurdle trophy has gathered dust for five years, as it didn’t move an inch while the stable’s Hurricane Fly dominated the race.

And it should stay on the Mullins shelf again, with the stable’s hold on the title seemingly secure with three runners today: Cheltenham champion-hurdler Faugheen, runner-up Arctic Fire, and Punchestown champion novice Nichols Canyon.

All have returned in triumph this season, with Arctic Fire winning the Hattons Grace and Nichols Canyon completing a treble, taking the Morgiana and the Ryanair within the space of six weeks in November-December.

Nichols Canyon defeated Faugheen in the Morgiana but Faugheen suggested that was just a blip by slamming yesterday’s winner, The New One, in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton and the handicapper says that Nichols Canyon is still a stone behind Faugheen.

I say ‘still’ because Canyon is only six, has two years on Faugheen and should improve on that rating, particularly here at Leopardstown, where he’s won the Deloitte as well as the Ryanair.

Faugheen looks formidable, but take note that Mullins calls it ‘round two’ between Faugheen and Nichols Canyon, as if they are close together, so my saver on banker and multiples has to be Canyon in case Faugheen does not have the fail-safe we’ve come to believe.

3.35 Leopardstown Another tasty handicap, containing a legal battle (that’ll be costly). Clar Na Mionn, named after his sire, Witness Box, should repeat his Christmas CD success over Bearly Legal, more obliquely but cleverly called after both sire and dam, Court Cave and Fair Size.

DAQMAN’S BETS (staked to win 20 points, except the banker, settled at SP, and the multiples)
BET 2.7pts win EIR NA CASCA (2.30 Leopardstown)
BANKER: BET 20pts win (nap) FAUGHEEN (3.05 Leopardstown)
