MILERS CROWN OF SOLID GOLD: Field Of Gold for Team Gosden atoned for his Newmarket 2,000 Guineas defeat with a scintillating and solid victory in the Irish version yesterday, setting himself top of the tree of modern milers. He was the second leg of a rare Group-race double for English raiders after 22-1 James’s Delight won the Greenlands sprint for Clive Cox.
CENTURY-BEST FILLIES’ GUINEAS: Daqman says today that only one English filly can put the Irish favourites to flight in the Curragh 1,000 Guineas, ‘one of the best 1,000 Guineas of this century.’
LAKE QUEEN OF THE CURRAGH
⭕ 3.40 Curragh (Irish 1,000 Guineas): TRAINERS: Aidan O’Brien 10 winners since 1997; Dermot Weld 4. FAVOURITES: four wins in the last eight years.
1: LAKE VICTORIA (Aidan O’Brien) Frankel filly unbeaten in five starts last year, winning the Moyglare, the Cheveley Park and the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies.
But late back in training, and modest sixth in the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas (Flight second, Simmering third, Duty First ninth).
2: FLIGHT (Ollie Sangster) Placed 6-6 including third in the May Hill to Desert Flower and second to the same winner in the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas. The big filly will benefit from the rain and the galloping track: BETDAQ 9.9 taken; ask for 2-1 a place.
3: SWELTER (Dermot Weld) First run back, comfortably beat Exactly and Cercene at Leopardstown in March. Cercene was only a length behind French ace Zarigana when fourth in the French 1,000 Guineas.
4: SIMMERING (Ollie Sangster) Moyglare runner-up to Lake Victoria and third in the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas, with stablemate Flight second.
ATSILA (Donnacha O’Brien) pushed out to beat Cercene in the Athasi Stakes over today’s CD three weeks back.
JANUARY (Aidan O’Brien) Twice second to Desert Flower in the May Hill and the Fillies Mile. January may not.
AND ANOTHER FILLY FORTUNA
⭕ 2.30 Curragh Return of Porta Fortuna, whose Coronation Stakes win last June was the first leg of a Group-1 hat-trick.
Her mark is 10lb higher than Birthe (1m 2f best trip) and Jancis (not won behind 7f), 15lb better than Listed-only winner One Look.
Wind back the years for six-year-old Vera’s Secret, late developer from the one stall who has shot up nearly 40lb from handicaps to a Group-3 romp the last day. Betdaq Betting Exchange 13.5 and around 15-10 a place.
SOSIE BACK ON THE ARC ROAD
⭕ 2.45 Longchamp (Prix d’Ispahan) Arc de Triomphe fourth when favourite, Sosie stopped a Spring hat-trick by Map Of Stars in the Ganay a month ago.
His principal opponents on this Ispahan road to 2025 Arc redemption are both English raiders.
Shock 28-1 neck winner of the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas from Porta Fortuna last year, Elmalka runs for Roger Varian who won the race in 2019.
And Team Gosden challenges with Sardinian Warrior, four in a row since his debut, culminating in the Queen Anne Trial at Ascot last month.
WELCOME 8.3 ON THE MAAT..
⭕ 3.05 Curragh (Tattersalls Gold Cup) If the 1,000 Guineas is the strongest, this is the deepest and toughest for punters in many years.
Aidan O’Brien has won it four times in the last seven but his Los Angeles (Ryan Moore) is neck and neck in the ratings with White Birch, who took this race for John Joseph Murphy as part of a Curragh hat-trick last Spring.
He comfortably turned over the O’Brien favourite, Auguste Rodin who, next time out, won the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Los Angeles, Irish Derby winner and third in the Arc, was odds on when beating White Birch a neck over a similar trip here at the Curragh three weeks back.
Yet the two Irish favourites – both on 121 – are officially 2lb behind last year’s Ispahan winner, Anmaat, another who climbed 40lb from the lower rungs of the ladder.
He clobbered the ‘Ascot Derby’ star, Calandagan, giving him weight in the Champion Stakes, with Royal Rhyme (short of room) in third. But 8.3 BETDAQ offers to win this morning; ask for 2-1 a place.
Ghostwriter was similarly hampered, beaten two lengths by Derby winner City Of Troy in the Eclipse.
