ALL EYES ARE ON DELACROIX
Classic trials at the double! Aidan O’Brien, who won both Chester Classic tests, the Cheshire Oaks (Minnie Hauk) and Chester Vase (Lambourn), bagged two more yesterday and is red hot for another at Leopardstown today.
Yesterday’s Lingfield Oaks Trial strike (Giselle by nine lengths) and Lingfield Derby Trial one-two (Puppet Master short-headed Stay True) made it four for Ryan Moore.
Today Moore, along with Sean Levy and Colin Keane, plus Christophe Soumillon and William Buick co-opted, are in Paris for the O’Brien attack on the two French Guineas.
But Ballydoyle’s Sunday-star player must be Delacroix in the Leopardstown Derby Trial (3.30), with Wayne Lordan in the hot seat. Colts behind him in the Ballysax were Lambourn and Puppet Master. Say no more!
DRAW BOOST FOR HOTAZHELL
⭕ 3.25 Longchamp (French 2,000 Guineas) Aidan O’Brien today bids for a sixth ‘Poulains’ – the French colts’ Guineas – with six different jockeys.
But the results by stall in the decade (4:11:3:3:2:2:6:4:7:1) suggest that one of his three players today, Camille Pissarro (out of gate 15), is knocked out by the bias, with today’s two Classics having bigger fields than normal.
Sean Levey rides handicapper Serengeti from the one stall but he’s rated only 94, which surely paints the picture for 116-rated Henri Matisse (gate 6, Ryan Moore) to be Ballydoyle’s No 1.
Though nearly three lengths behind Camille Pissarro in the Lagardere on soft, Moore and Matisse made up for it in the Breeders Cup Juvenile on firm. Today’s weather in Paris is sunshine on a watered surface.
Only two lengths down in the Lagardere, and out of gate 3 today, Misunderstood is ridden by Alexis Pouchin and Ridari (5), who beat that one in the Fontaineblau trial in April, by Mickael Barzalona. They are the top French jockeys well drawn.
The Greenham winner Jonquil (12) is also disadvantaged by a double-figure stall but low numbers could help Beresford and Doncaster Futurity winner Hotazhell (Shane Foley out of 2) for Jessica Harrington.
ZARIGANA THE NEW ZARKAVA
⭕ 4.05 Longchamp (French 1,000 Guineas) Eight out of the last nine winners of this Pouliches were drawn in single figures, with seven coming out of stalls 1 to 6.
All four contenders for Aidan O’Brien today (Exactly 8, Bedtime Story 9, Merrily 10 and Heaven’s Gate 12) appear to have extra work to do.
The Imprudence winner Better Together (Alexis Pouchin for Andre Fabre out of 4) and third, Daylight (3) have the draw in their favour.
So, too, the Francis-Henri Graffard pair, Mandanaba (Maxime Guyon in 1) and Zarigana (Mickael Barzalona in 7), the Marcel Boussac runner-up who won the Grotte trial on her reappearance.
By Siyouni out of a Frankel mare, Zarigana is related to Group-1 winners up to 1m 4f, and is granddaughter of Arc heroine, Zarkava.
HE’S BRED TO BE A LEGEND..
⭕ 4.35 Newcastle Kildare Legend climbed the ranks from class 5 to class 3 before managing a place at Newmarket in the Old Rowley Cup (class 2) in October.
By Sea The Stars out of a Dawn Approach mare, Kildare Legend is well drawn for his reappearance today, dropped a grade back to class 3.
I think we can expect a better show from Sam Hawkens, with Tom Marquand taking over.
They backed him every time in two decent runs at Ascot and Ripon, with the ground against in between at Haydock. Gelded now.
