🇫🇷 ‘PERFECT’ GUINEAS APPEAL FAILS: She’s Perfect, trainer Charlie Fellowes and jockey Kieran Shoemark lost Sunday’s French 1,000 Guineas a second time yesterday when a France Galop inquiry into her demotion by the Longchamp stewards confirmed that she had caused interference. See 4.13 Longchamp below.
APPLEBY YOUNGSTERS 60%
⭕ 3.55 Yarmouth A field full of two-year-old newcomers bar Wild Thoughts, who will need to do much better than on debut.
The market is likely to be informative but not for nothing is Yarmouth called Newmarket-by-the-sea, where you can splash out on Charlie Appleby with his 30% strike-rate.
Silent Applause, a 1.4m guineas purchase who runs for Charlie Appleby, is the likely favourite, with the yard’s current two-year-old turf tally for 2025 at 6-10. BETDAQ 2.5 this morning.
But the race should be watched for future winners. At a bigger price, Amorim makes a fair bit of appeal, being a full-brother to Group-3 winner Rumstar.
Peel Park is also of interest being by Mehmas and with his dam a half-sister to a Listed 6f winner.
Postmodern was a 270,000-guinea yearling by Too Darn Hot, related to US Grade-2 winners.
ASMARANI BRED FOR AN ARC
⭕ 4.13 Longchamp (Prix Hocquart) Francis-Henri Graffard sent out the winner of this last year, Calandagan, who would then take the “Ascot Derby” (King Edward V11 Stakes) at the royal meeting.
Graffard keeps the Longchamp 1,000 Guineas after a French Jockey Club inquiry confirmed that Zarigana should be awarded the race for interference by the Newmarket-trained ‘winner,’ She’s Perfect.
Today his Chantilly stable has Asmarani bidding for its third Prix Hocquart in four years (BETDAQ 4.0 taken this morning).
Asmarani’s sire, Sottsass, and grandsire, Sea The Stars, both won the Arc de Triomphe. The colt has a plum draw in 3 under Mickael Barzalona.
Meanwhile, because the son of Gleneagles is a gelding, Calandagan must be aimed outside Ascot to the top neighbouring venues for a summer Group-1 campaign.
His targets are the Coronation Cup (Friday, June 6) at the Epsom Derby meeting and the Coral-Eclipse (Saturday, July 5) at Sandown.
HOPE SPRINGS AT HAYDOCK
⭕ 5.22 Haydock The one stall is looking for a hat-trick in this race via Invitorio but he was backed down to favourite just the once last season.
That was on soft at Redcar in October, when he made every yard, from start to finish.
Today’s forecast is ‘good to firm, cloudy,’ which certainly clouds the issue. We can only watch the market to see if he is busy.
Kamekist (2) is also an enigma, as one who has performed mainly on AW, and Miss Collada is only 1-8 on turf, albeit often playing in a higher grade last summer.
High On Hope (0-8 on turf ) has a similar profile, but has twice been placed at Haydock and is dropping two grades from an unlucky run at Chester.
As can often happen there, High On Hope was short of room but was beaten less than three lengths, despite suffering interference. Could be a springer in today’s market.
Of the rest, first time in a handicap after two good runs, one of them in class 2, the William Haggas filly Suhub is the only I fear. Well related and allowed to develop in her own time as a two-year-old.
