5-1 WINNER SAVES THE MONEY: Daqman’s three headline bets for a Daq Multiples treble finished 121 yesterday, with its hub, Penhill, failing to settle despite the presence of pace horses, and finishing runner-up. The winners were Pyrocumulus (WON 5-1) and Nemoralia (WON 8-13)

THIRD HIDDEN HORSE TODAY: With his Hidden Horse form now 12, he tries for two wins out of three with a 9.8 shot in the Brighton Challenge. A Haydock bet and another banker tonight at Sandown make up the second treble bid of the week.

‘MY KINGDOM FOR A (HIDDEN) HORSE..’

3.20 Brighton Challenge Cup I rarely win at Brighton so it’s a challenge today – literally – to be looking at back-to-back big-race winners there after a 5-1 hit in yesterday’s Brighton Mile.

But the same-again feel is more about the defeat of Penhill (good try, Luca) at Pontefract, when I bet against the three-year-old bottomweight, Hernandoshideaway.

Here we go again, with the same conundrum: can foot-of-the-handicap Mister Rockandroll win for the Classic generation against nine older horses?

What put me off ‘Hernando’ yesterday was that he’d not been seen since May, but he’d never been out of the first two.

Mister Rockandroll has had a jading – for punters as well as the horse – 10 races this season, beaten every time and not improved an ounce: in fact, he’s dropped a pound since his turf return in April and is level peggings with his AW mark of February.

He’s never reached the frame on turf beyond 10 furlongs and, overall, has been beaten favourite three times. He’s got to be a paper favourite to lay, unless the others are equally incapable.

In fact, the opposition has amassed 25 wins, and one trainer is going for a double rarer than mine.

Tony Carroll, who won the Mile with Pyrocumulus, has Laughing Jack down to a mark within a pound of his latest success, which was a step up to today’s class 4 after four wins in lower grade. He’s also claimed off.

Andrew Balding has lost form since Cape Victoria won a week ago, with 19 consecutive losers, missing strike badly with nine seconds and thirds. Oops!

Cape Victoria’s previous win was over the CD at Brighton but she’s 15lb higher now, less the 5lb claim of Edward Greatrex.

Local trainer Gary Moore is the one who’s suddenly back in business with two winners – figures of 11042 – in two days, and Kingdom is a hidden horse.

The Montjeu gelding drops from class 2 and 3 races since last September when exactly a stone higher than today, having won twice in Ireland for Aidan O’Brien: 9.8 BETDAQ offers this morning.

CASTLE COMBE LOOKS SURE TO GO CLOSE

5.10 Haydock Andrew Balding’s runner here, Haines, has never won on turf. Smoky Hill has never won in England. Race To Glory has never won; full stop.

John Quinn must have felt it as a kick in the shins when he got the glass horse, The Kid, beaten because hanging at Haydock last July, back for the same race one year on, pipped in the final 50 yards last month. Good try, John.

Spice Fair, Johnny Delta and Fantasy King are knocking on a bit now, and are unlikely to have the speed, unless the forecast showers change the surface.

Talking of ‘missing strike’, step forward – and blush – bridesmaid Rowlestone Lass, whose form last June to October was 22222242. She’s managed to score a couple of times on AW but her turf form since then has dropped to 4004.

That leaves us with Castle Coombe and Injun Sands, plus the class-5 pair, Rideonmaster (12 lengths adrift of Castle Coombe at (Newbury) and Lady Of Vue, another on a long losing run but still 2lb higher than her last wining mark.

Injun Sands cannot entirely be discounted, with only eight runs to his name but he’s scored only on AW and has been beaten a total of 28 lengths in his last two turf starts.

Castle Coombe also has to step up form class-5 success (at Lingfield, Kempton and at Newbury last month), though might have gone very close on the last day when he couldn’t get a run up the rail at Newbury.

It’s nearly a year since he finished outside the first four and has a near-50% strike rate in the frame from 20 races, so a reliable chap.

SHABAR HAS SHOT CLEAR IN THE MARKET

6.50 Sandown Al Shaqab Racing has hit the headlines with seven winners in the last fortnight, including that fabulous five-timer at Glorious Goodwood, with he of the flying dismount figuring prominently in their glory.

Frankie for Al Shaqab on Shahbar should be the hub of your Daq Multiples today, given tender handling on an educational first run at Leicester.

It’s 8.4 bar on BETDAQ this morning, with Bag of Diamonds – needs further – the lonely dog on a raft, drifting over the Hannon betting weir, and making Shahbar a banker. Though I rarely, if ever, move all in on horses that haven’t won a race, the market says: no danger!
