PUNCHESTOWN GOES FLAT: It’s a Classsic week for English Flat racing, with trials day at Ascot tomorrow, followed Friday to Sunday by the Newmarket Guineas meeting. So today Daqman is talent spotting in the major races at Punchestown before he has to go Flat out at home.
PUNCHESTOWN CHAMPION PARADE
⭕ 4.15 today (Champion Novice Hurdle): Champion trainer Willie Mullins (and I mean champion of England and Ireland.. again) has an 80% strike rate in this and has scored with four favourites out of his last five.
As far as favourites go, Kopek Des Bordes equals his trainer with four consecutive wins as a hot-pot, culminating in the Supreme at Cheltenham.
That Salvator Mundi is second favourite speaks volumes for the market leader who beat him more than 18 lengths at Cheltenham.
⭕ 4.50 today (Champion Novice Chase): Impaire Et Passe was 10 lengths behind Ballyburn at Leopardstown, and Ballyburn was eight lengths behind stablemate Lecky Watson at Cheltenham.
But it’s not that easy: Ballyburn (bad mistake; never traveling after) is favourite to turn around that form and Paul Townend sticks with him.
⭕ 6.00 today (Champion Chase) Willie Mullins’ winning sequence (five) was interrupted last year, and Ryanair winner Fact Or File has never won over this minimum trip.
Those who saw Marine Nationale slam Jonbon (Solness 4th) in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham thought Qilixios might have won but for falling at the last.
And Solness, who doesn’t like Cheltenham, had beaten Marine Nationale twice before that, including when Gaelic Warrior divided them at Leopardstown over Christmas.
GALOPIN BACK TO GOLD GLORY
⭕ 5.30 tomorrow (Punchestown Gold Cup) Galopin Des Champs has been beaten in his four consecutive chases at Punchestown, including in the last two runnings of this race.
Spillane’s Tower came from behind to beat Monty’s Star in the Champion Novice at this meeting last year, when Banbridge was winner of the Champion Chase but stepped up in trip on a sound surface and won the King George.
⭕ 6.40 Friday (Champion Hurdle) State Man has won six champion hurdles: Irish Champion Hurdle (Leopardstown 2022), Punchestown (2023), Leopardstown, Cheltenham and Punchestown (2024) but has just the Irish championship at Leopardstown this year.
Golden Ace won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March when State Man fell (clear the the last) but both now have to beat Constitution Hill, winner of the 2023 Cheltenham title (six lengths in front of State Man) but who has taken to diving at his fences and has fallen the last twice.

⭕ 4.28 today (Nottinghamshire Oaks): A tasty £31k prize and black type on offer for fillies and mares of four and five on what is likely to be good-to-firm ground.
The eye-catcher for me on breeding (and the 8.2 Betdaq Betting Exchange offers this morning) is Team Gosden’s Jane Temple, who only came to hand in the autumn.
She is by Siyouni, the sire of Paddington, St Marks Basilica and Arc winner Sotsass, out of a Giant’s Causeway mare, sister to 2,000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand.
