THE EDGE: The Edge previews the IPL clash between Chennai Super Kings v Punjab Kings with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
Chennai Super Kings v Punjab Kings
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The IPL continues on BETDAQ Betting Exchange as we have the clash of the kings on Wednesday as Chennai Super Kings host Punjab Kings! CSK have been very poor this season, and they sit rock bottom having managed only two wins from their nine games. Maybe this is the final year for MS Dhoni? He got plenty of criticism at the start of the tournament for a low strike rate looking rusty; he has definitely looked better as the tournament has gone on, and he has ended up as captain again! When anyone doubts him; the man is truly evergreen!
From a Punjab Kings point of view, this is a must win game given how poor CSK have been. Punjab are in a reasonably strong position with eleven points from their nine games; and after everyone played the weekend that left them just outside the top four. They were unfortunate with the rain in their last game, they had scored just over 200 runs against KKR and they would have had a great chance to defend that because KKR have been quite poor this season. It would be a shame if that cost them a playoff spot, but as I said above they are still in a good position – dropping points here isn’t an option!
Punjab Kings know what they have to do, from a CSK point of view they are just looking for some pride at this stage of the tournament. Players are playing for contracts next year as probably their main motivation – this year shows a slow start can really snowball when franchise sides lose their chance of getting to the playoffs.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
We had an incredible high scoring IPL last year, and while this year hasn’t quite been the same, it’s still be reasonably high scoring. Chennai hasn’t changed – it’s still tougher to bat here than at other grounds. We tend to see a lot of spin here towards the later stage of the tournament, especially on the nights when we don’t get dew. The first inning scores here have been; 155/9 (chased), 196/7 (won), 183/6 (won), 103/9 (chased) and 154 all out (chased). CSK have batted first the last twice, they might try chasing this time!
RECOMMENDED BET:
It’s not often that you see CSK as the relatively big underdogs with home advantage – they are trading 2.3 here. Much is made about their strong home record, but their standard of cricket this season just hasn’t been good enough and they haven’t been winning at home either. They’ve only recorded one win from their five games here which isn’t like them. It’s hard to see past a Punjab win here given the gulf in class between the sides – the CSK batting line-up just hasn’t been good enough this season and I’m happy to side with Punjab at 1.73 with a confident three point bet.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
Given the last two games here, and the general trend of scoring at this venue, I wouldn’t go into this game expecting a high score. We might get a heavy dew and that could change things, so that’s the one thing to watch out for with scoring. I really want to take on the CSK batting here in either innings to be honest, as that’s where I see most market movement. That will be my main in-running strategy here.
