THE NEWS ACCORDING TO DAQMAN..

PLAY MISTY Henry Daly must have a great chance in the Mares’ Novices Hurdle Final at Newbury on Saturday, with Briery Belle and Tara Mist.

Briery Belle was third behind another of Saturday’s probables, Morello Royale, at Warwick in January but had collided with a rival three out.

She still managed to finish in front of Molo, who then won 14 lengths on the last day at Chepstow.

Tara Mist ran As De Mee to half a length at Leiester in January before that one won the open Novices’ Hurdle Final at Sandown earlier this month. Back with the mares, she could be a standout.

BOOM BOOM! Marcus Tregoning, he of the summer strawboater, appears to have swerved the delights of Dubai with his dual Cambridgeshire winner Bronze Angel.

Instead he remains top weight in the Lincoln handicap on Saturday week, though would be racing off his highest ever mark (111).

But rated the exact same (I love tautology) with the Racing Post – off their 119 – is the same stable’s Boom And Bust, in the Lincoln getting more than a stone from Bronze Angel.

Moreover, Boom And Bust is racing off his lowest mark since completing four wins out of five in the summer of 2012.

Is his drop of 12lb since the start of last season deserved marking-down for deterioration at the age of eight, or is his form disguised for a handicap by his having run 10 races in the Pattern between April 2013 and November last year?

EVEN BREAK I’m glad to see that the new Champion Chaser, Dodging Bullets, and Champion Bumper winner Moon Racer will be given long breaks until the autumn, and I hope that – much as I love him after his 44.0 win for me – Cause Of Causes will not be running in the Grand National.

Readers of this column know I’m dead against the exploitation of young horses, and one reason why Willie Mullins does so well is that he doesn’t run them. Except to win on the big occasion.

So we can rest assured that Djakadam will be well looked after on his way to win the 2016 Gold Cup. After first taking the Punchestown Gold Cup (April 29th), of course.

Un De Sceaux, Douvan and Faugheen will also go to Punchestown. Vautour may go to Fairyhouse or Aintree.

JOCKEYS’ TITLE The start of the Flat needs reforming, just as the end of the Flat needed reform. To ‘solve’ the issue by introducing different start and finish dates for the jockey’s title is tinkering with the engine, instead of giving it a rebore.

The powers-that-be have obviously read up on politicians’ logic. ‘We must be seen to be doing something. Here’s something. Let’s do it.’

TAKE SUZI FOR WINNING START

Jumps racing provides the better action today. As a result of that, I am concentrating on two decent cards at Haydock and Warwick.

The opener at Haydock is a good race with former Supreme Novice’s Hurdle winner, Cinders and Ashes heading the weights. He’s not the force he once was due to some injuries and off top weight, you’d have to be sceptical about his chances of even making the frame in a competitive race like this.

Dark Dune, War Singer and Minella Fiveo all look to have decent chances in this. Dark Dune has a list of places beside his name since November of last year with a win finally coming last time out at Newcastle. War Singer’s form is quite patchy as he doesn’t finish his races well but if he hits the form that he is capable of, he is in with a shout. Minella Fiveo was a winner last time out, only two weeks ago, and he takes another step up in class and in the handicap. I think a rating of 118 may be getting to his limit.

The most solid option in the field is to side with A Boy Named Suzi. He proved to be quite useful on the flat getting to a rating of 103 and has transferred to Hurdles seamlessly. He won a decent Novice Hurdle over Christmas, beating a horse that is now rated 137, and has gone on since to finish fourth in a Listed Handicap Hurdle last time out at Musselburgh. It will be hard to beat A Boy Named Suzi if he runs anywhere near that form again.

The 3.50 at Haydock is another nice race, a two and a half mile Handicap Chase, and this one looks to be in the grasp of the Alan King and Wayne Hutchinson team.

The pair go for this one with Roberto Pegasus. He was a winner last time out at Plumpton and that form has been franked since with the second, Representingceltic, going on and winning a similar event at Kempton last weekend. Ground and trip should be no issue to this son of Fusaichi Pegasus and he was also a decent Hurdler with some good runs last season, getting to a high mark of 122. Although this is only his second time over fences, he should be well prepared for it having been a little slow early on in his chasing debut last time and he is the one for me.

My final bet at Haydock runs at 4.25 where A Vos Garde appears to have everything in his favour. Ground and trip should be no issue to this one and is about 15lbs well in at the weights on a mark of 138. Although Three Faces West takes 7lbs off courtesy of James Cowley, that still puts him badly off at the weights.

Charlie Longsdon’s A Vos Garde got off to a flying start with two wins in Bumpers and finished third on his hurdling debut back in November. Since then he scored next time out at Doncaster and that form has been franked. He stayed on well last time to slot into second in a Listed event Huntingdon and a repeat of that run will surely be too good for his opponents today.

I have one bet at Warwick this afternoon as there are some trappy races there today. Belmount runs in the 3.35 for Nigel Twiston-Davies with his son, Sam, in the plate. He ran with great credit last time out, finishing second to Creswell Breeze, giving him five pounds but Creswell Breeze has been something of a revelation this season and Belmount is worth a bet at a nice price.
