CAN GOSDEN GIVE O’BRIEN THE BOOT? York has arrived, with Aidan O’Brien looking for a fourth fillies-trial strike in a row but in a race – the Musidora – which Team Gosden usually wins, and was challenging with Go Go Boots at 11.0 on BETDAQ this morning.
TOMORROW: The Dante, colts Derby trial.
CHAMP OFFERS LOOKED BIG
⭕ 2.10 York (Race To The Ebor) Ages four and five win this every time, with eight out of nine from stalls 5 to 10.
Though distance winner The Reverend (3) has raced mainly on the soft, he is by Lope De Vega, whose progeny do well on all terrain.
When Dark Moon Rising (8) won at Southwell in November, Paradias (4) for Alan King was third but King has struck a seam of form this month with six winners in 10 days.
However, history reveals that Paradias has finished three lengths behind Marhaba The Champ (5) over the CD at York (firm) and is now 10lb worse off.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 9.7 Marhaba The Champ, 10 Paradias
11.5 HANNON DARK HORSE
⭕ 2.42 York LAYS LOGIC: Outright favourites have drawn a blank in the decade, with eight double-figure SPs in the last nine.
Two Tribes has Ryan Moore’s help but is 1-11 on turf and that win was over 5f not 6f and when fitted with blinkers first time.
Dark Thirty hadn’t raced over 6f since his debut when asked to drop back from a 7f success at York on this very card, he was third on the July Course then won on the Rowley Mile course last Spring.
He did the trick again at Doncaster in March but remains well handicapped for a stable having a revival this Spring: 11 winners in eight days’ racing since May 2. BETDAQ 12.0.
First Folio is 4-6 at York, three of his four strikes coming on firm ground. Three wins rated 86, 90 and 97 (off 87 today) but none in cheekpieces and he’s been slow to come to hand this year.
STATUS IS BEST OF THREE
⭕ 3.13 York Karl Burke has three goes (in a field of eight) for this Group 2, with Night Raider yet to run a place on turf, and Marshman – fifth in 2023 – well behind at 25-1 in this race last year.
So Burke’s best chance must be the back-to-back scorer at Newbury last Spring, Elite Status.
But he has to step up if he is to catch Kevin Ryan’s Commonwealth Cup winner, Inisherin, who has had a wind op in the close season. BETDAQ each 3.5 this morning.
BOOTS MADE FOR RUNNING
⭕ 3.45 York (Musidora Stakes) It’s Team Gosden 8, Aidan O’Brien 1 in winners of this fillies’ trial but O’Brien’s one Musidora success Snowfall (2021), went on to win the Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks in quick succession.
And the O’Brien-Moore combo have won fillies’ trials with Minnie Hauk, Giselle and Garden Of Eden in the last week.
However, Whirl was so unconvincing first time out this season (6th of 9 at the Curragh a month ago) that the vet was called to check that she was ‘normal’.
Serenity Prayer, trained by Andrew Balding, who won this last year with a 22-1 outsider, needs to have improved a stone since breaking her maiden at Newbury.
Smoken may be best of the Ralph Beckett pair and rated on a par with Whirl is Miss Tonnerre, Ed Walker’s May Hill fourth, who had won when fresh on her debut.
By the same sire, and representing the Gosdens, Go Go Boots scored at Lingfield with her long white fore-socks still flashing at the camera for another half a furlong before she could be pulled up. I took BETDAQ 11 and 3.7 for two places.
THE FAVOURITE WINS 50%
⭕ 4.18 York LAYS LOGIC: Gallant’s pedigree always pointed to a step up from sprints, and here he is first time over 7f in a race where favourites score 50% of the time.
They had high hopes of Red Sand last year and he could be one to follow after a seasonal introduction on AW, first time ridden by Tom Marquand that day.
Jolly Roger, who was third, has a 2lb pull for a head defeat with Ryan Moore taking over. So it all looks tough at the top of this handicap.
