He now previews tonight’s match between Chelsea v Shakhtar Donetsk

Champions League 2012-13: Match Day 4 Wednesday Preview:
Match day 4 of the 2012-2013 group games E to H takes place tonight and at this point we find the British and Italian clubs stuttering along in their efforts to gain qualification to the next stage. Tonight sees the best placed British team to qualify, Manchester United, in a tricky away tie in Portugal but it is their English Premier League rivals for which I feel can take a giant step towards qualification in London this evening.

Chelsea v Shakhtar Donetsk

My Yacht is bigger than yours….

Chelsea, or Chelski, entertain Ukrainian league champions Shakhtar Donetsk at the Bridge and with two very wealthy rival ‘oligarch’ owners who have both invested heavily in their respective clubs over the years, their will be an added pressure on both managers to secure qualification. Shakhtar owner Rinat Akhmetov has already had his team draw first blood on his media shy rival Roman Abramovich’s London club at the Donbass Arena on match day 3 with a deserved two to one victory however they can expect, and will get, a much improved showing from the current holders of the Champion’s League trophy when they step on to the Stamford bridge pitch tonight.

Dignified Di Matteo….

It is difficult to discuss Chelsea FC these days with out other non football issues coming into the conversation. Towards the end of last season and in recent weeks there has been some very unsavoury incidents involving Chelsea FC and for all concerned and Football itself lets hope these matters can be resolved as a matter of urgency. On top of having to deal with these issues there is a big football club to run and matches to be played and full credit has to go to Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo for his dignified and professional manner in how he has handled this unwelcome pressure whilst keeping his team well in the hunt for the English Premier and Champion’s league titles.

Home Advantage…?

Does home advantage count in Europe? Well yes it does and even more so when it involves an ‘eastern-European’ team is coming to town. In the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons Shakhtar paid visits to England’s capital and duly lost 2-1 to Fulham and 5-1 to Arsenal(Van Persie didn’t play!). Both the Arsenal and Shakhtar sides have the same core squads today. In this season’s group stage Shakhtar played very well away to Juventus securing a deserved 1-1 draw however Juve could only secure a draw away to lowly CL debutants Nordsjaelland and somehow recovered from two down at Stamford bridge last September to somehow escape with a point.

Chelsea’s home record in Europe is magnificent having lost just five from eighty eight home matches and having won six of their last seven.

Individual flair..defensive scares…

Both of these teams have the right attitude on how football should be played and this evening’s game should be a highly entertaining affair. Chelsea are without Ashley Cole however the possible return of John Terry and the definite return of the ever entertaining David Luiz will be a boost for Chelsea. Their will be individual brilliance on show from both sides tonight with players such as Oscar and Mata for Chelsea and Fernandhino and Willian for the visitors. Chelsea are going through a minor blip in recent weeks both on and off the pitch however I believe Di Matteo will get his club back on track tonight and the ‘blues’ will let their football do their talking.
