Spanish-American Football….
The UEFA Champion’s League final is beginning to shape up like one of those Wembley stadium American NFL Games. In recent years every Autumn a few teams from the gridiron league play a game in front of a sold out Wembley arena to give British fans a chance to see live their American based heroes in the flesh. On the 25th of May 2013 at this very venue their may be far away heroes of a different ilk on show and the strong possibility of the first ever El Clasico to be played outside of Spain. Their is still the matter of one top class team and one average team to get past however with Sepp Blatter proposing his UEFA marketing CEO and director to referee these Semi-Finals then now is the time to be sending that Spanish ex- girlfriend some flowers with a note saying “entradas per favour x”.

La Liga Week 32….
La Liga hits week 32 and FC Barcelona have it all but wrapped up sitting thirteen points ahead with just seven games to go. Both clubs remain in the Champion’s League but Real Madrid also have the Copa Del Rey Final to contest on May 17th so Mourhino knows where his focus is on and it certainly is not on chasing an almost unassailable lead against possibly the best team on the planet. The team in La Liga most likely to benefit from all this is Real’s cross city rivals, Atletico, who for most of this season held second place and at times looked likely to usurp their two more illustrious rivals in the La Liga title race.

Atletico Amnesia….
Atletico Madrid have themselves an almost unassailable lead in the fight for the coveted automatic third place UEFA Champion’s League spot. Coach Diego Simeone will have set out two targets at the start of this season, secure automatic qualification to next season’s Champion’s League and win the Copa Del Rey. A place in the Copa Final is secure and bar a monumental collapse by his players then the Champion’s League spot is just within touching distance. In recent weeks the Atletico players have been guilty of looking over their shoulders and on occasions have looked like they have forgotten how to play football. They have been underperforming and look so nervous at times however just getting through games with a point or three. The team causing Simeone and Co. Most heartache is fourth placed Real Sociedad who are now within nine points and on a thirteen game unbeaten run. Last week Atletico were in need of a soft team and an easy victory to settle their nerves and they got this in the form of lowly Granada who they beat five nil. This has indeed been a timely confidence booster but they must now hit the road to the Andlusian Capitol of Sevilla where a sterner test awaits.

Guess who’s back….
Ex-Valencia gaffer Unai Emery is back in La Liga after his short and unsuccessful stint as coach of Spartak Moscow.

The forty one year old was prone to getting his mid game tactics wrong when at Valencia and after last week’s game against Betis it seems his old Valencia traits have travelled with the Spaniard. Three nil up against bitter rivals Betis who were down to ten men only to end up drawing three all. Valencia fans will have been saying “we told You so!”. Unai Emery may have his critics but since taking over in Sevilla they have played six La Liga matches at their Sanchez Pizjuan home and won all six, a perfect return from their new coach. Admittedly most of these games were against teams in the bottom eight of the table and this week’s rivals will be a big step up from any of those beaten opponents.

Mice or Men….!?
Sevilla v Atletico Madrid will be a very interesting game to watch. As mentioned above Los Rojiblancos under Emery are on a six game home winning streak and will see Atletico as a major scalp. The home side will not sit back looking for a safe and respectable draw for two reasons, one, this is not Emery’s style and two, they sit mid-division with an outside chance of a European place so three points or nothing is the only call. These tactics are dangerous when playing a decent counter attacking side and this is certainly a card Atletico won’t mind playing when such opportunities arise. These two sides have potent weapons up front, Sevilla with 18 goal Negredo and Atletico with 24 goal Falcao, an interesting head to head. Atletico’s recent form is that if they can’t win then they won’t lose and have been prone to concentrate more on defending than attacking, always a dangerous tactic (just ask Giovanni Trappatoni!)

It seems to me it the Atletico Players themselves that are nervously dropping deep during games much to the dismay of their more courageous coach Diego Simeone. Last weeks five nil drubbing of Granada will have been a huge boost and proved that when they resort to their usual offensive game then they can get the goals. This is the belief that Simeone will want his players to take to Sevilla and cement that Champion’s League spot once and for all. If Atletico man up and take the game to Sevilla then I believe they will win. If Atletico sit deep and play on the counter, I also believe they will win.

Note-Some of my recent tips have been foiled by very very late goals, case in point Ireland v Austria. Please be sensible and always trade in running (when in position) on your Betdaq account. Good Luck!
