MULLINS RETAINS THE TITLE: Dan Skelton was leading into the Sandown finale yesterday but Willie Mullins ran him down with a treble to retain his NH trainers’ title, the trio appropriately including the Celebration Chase with Il Etait Temps in a very fast time. Season’s figures:
EARNINGS: Willie Mullins £3,570,991, Dan Skelton £3,371,484, Paul Nicholls £2,541,051.
WINNERS: Dan Skelton 179, Olly Murphy 141, Paul Nicholls 99 (Willie Mullins 38).
PERCENTAGE (wins to runs): Olly Murphy 25%, Harry Derham and Jamie Snowden 21%
PROFIT (to one point stake): Willie Mullins 86.92, Olly Murphy 58.74, Jamie Snowden 22.67.
10-1 JUMPS FINALE FOR DAQMAN: Let the real racing take over today, says Daqman, though he had the best jumps season of any tipster, with – just one example – the correct 1-2-3 in the Grand National.
Saturday:
Profit on the final day of the jumps: 28.50
WON 10-1 BLUEKING D’OROUX
WON 5-6 GAELIC WARRIOR
SEEING STARS IN THE GANAY
⭕ 3.25 Longchamp (Prix Ganay) Sotsass won this in 2020 on the way to his Arc and Joseph O’Brien primed a 2022 Royal Ascot winner with Ganay success.
Joseph is now joined by Henry De Bromhead and England’s Karl Burke in a strong assault on this £142k French Group 1.
Al Riffa (O’Brien) won the Berlin grand prix but was well down the field in last year’s Arc, when French Derby third, Sosie, was fourth as favourite but lacks a prep run today.
Royal Rhyme (Burke) was third in the Champion Stakes and will love today’s soft ground.
So, too, will De Bromhead’s Group-3 Toulouse winner Higher Leaves, who gets the fillies’ allowance.
But Francis Graffard’s Map Of Stars has been in such form this Spring in France that it’s hard to resist him in his bid for a four-timer, after stepping up: Listed, Group 3 and finally Group 2, winning the Harcourt Horizon Dor behind).
James Doyle misses the ride on ‘Stars’ with a broken collar-bone and the sometimes flamboyant Mickael Barzalona takes over.
STOP AND GET ON TERMINUS
⭕ 4.45 Southwell Ralph Beckett, who landed a double at Sandown on Friday, has Oisin Murphy booked for a half-sister to decent AW winners who has joined him from Sir Michael Stoute.
The Terminus scored first time out at Kempton last season and Sir Michael put her into a Listed for juveniles at Sandown, when she ran prominently and weakened only in the final furlong. This is down a couple of grades.
‘JIM’ HAS A WICKED WORRY
⭕ 5.15 Southwell The first test of this year’s Wood Ditton, which often produces an outpouring of winners, is how Muhaajim gets on in this race.
William Haggas’s Sea the Stars colt out of a Group-1 two-year-old winner was prominent at Newmarket until the final furlong, looking an assured future winner.
Great to see Sir Mark Prescott still going out to bat in the usual way but that would usually mean Aqab will be looking for a handicap mark.
Dixieland Blues and Venezuelan have AW form in the book but the danger to Muhaajim is most likely Wicked, Kingman half-brother to a Guineas winner.
