PREVIEW

Southend entertain Crawley Town knowing that a win would close the gap on Swindon to just two points, although they will have played two additional games.

Due to the weather disruptions at the start of February the fixture list looks somewhat crowded and the Shrimpers are back in action after facing Burton on Saturday. A 2-0 win on the weekend ended a two game losing streak in which they had failed to find the back of the net.

Paul Sturrock’s side have only won half of their home league games this season and have done well to keep themselves in the promotion mix. Much of the Shrimpers’ good work has been built on a solid back five that has seen them ship only 15 goals at home since August.

Crawley have suffered a terrible run of form since Valentine’s Day and their 1-0 home defeat to Torquay was a fifth in a row without a victory. Losing their two best strikers has really affected Steve Evans’ side and they need a quick turnaround to save their season.

Southend have shown enough defensively to keep Crawley at bay and Saturday’s win suggests they have put recent defeats to Swindon and Oxford behind them. I’m happy to tip the home win at around 2.62 which will bring the Shrimpers within touching distance of the top of the league.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Back Southend at around 2.62: 4 points
Sunday’s Return: +6.16 points
MARCH RETURN TO DATE: +24.36
