PREVIEW
Micky Adams’ Port Vale attempt to cement their place in the automatic promotion spots of League Two when they take on struggling Oxford, who sit 19th in the table, at Vale Park tonight.
After an impressive start to the season Port Vale sit six points behind leaders Gillingham but have a game in hand, so that gap could just be three points going into the weekend if they can claim victory today.
Unfortunately for Vale though, influential skipper Doug Loft will miss out with the calf injury he picked up in the 2-0 win at Exeter last week.
Teenage goalkeeper Sam Johnson made such an impression on his debut in the midweek penalty shootout win over Walsall in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, saving three penalties and then scoring the winning spot-kick. He is expected to keep his place between the posts.
Oxford’s captain Jake Wright is expected to return in defence against Vale while the likes of Andrew Whing, Johnny Mullins and Damian Batt may feature
United did knock out Cheltenham from the League Trophy last week but had lost three of the five games previous to that and it is hard to see them claiming a surprise win later.
Port Vale side have only lost to Gillingham at home this season and a home win looks on the cards tonight.
