PREVIEW

Sunderland meet Arsenal for the second occasion in seven days and it offers Martin O’Neill a chance to get revenge for the crushing league defeat at the Stadium of Light. Thierry Henry’s winner was the perfect parting gift to the Gunners and they can expect another tough game on Wearside.

The 2-1 defeat ended a run of three straight league wins for the Black Cats, but there was more than enough in the game last Saturday to suggest they can give Arsenal a run for their money. Sunderland needed a replay and extra-time against Middlesbrough to reach the fifth round, but comfortably beat Peterborough in the previous cup game.

Before Saturday’s loss, Sunderland had not been beaten by the Gunners for three games at the Stadium of Light. Arsene Wenger’s side have looked poor at the back of late and AC Milan’s 4-0 win on Wednesday highlights the defensive problems at the club.

Wenger made a few changes to his starting XI for the Aston Villa cup game and with the Champions League fixture at the San Siro, he can be expected to repeat the trick. The Gunners still started with a strong line-up, but it may not be enough to get the better of Sunderland – who have a week off this time.

It was level until the last second in the previous meeting and I fancy Sunderland to go one better in the cup contest.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Back Sunderland at around 2.93: 4 points
Friday’s Return: +5.7 points
