It’s the grudge match to end all grudge matches as two of the biggest characters in British boxing go head-to-head in a bout that cannot avoid controversy. In the press conference following his defeat to Vitali Klitschko in February earlier this year, Dereck Chisora and former heavyweight champion David Haye brawled in front of the world’s media having exchanged insults across the room. It was one of the most extraordinary scenes ever seen in the world of boxing.

With the interest created from that infamous incident in Munich it was no surprise to see promoter Frank Warren get around the boxers’ ban by getting it licensed through the little-known Luxembourg Boxing Board.

Haye is not naturally a heavyweight and has had to work extremely hard to keep the weight on since stepping up from the cruiserweight division. He was found out by the other Klitschko brother, Wladimir, in his last bout for the heavyweight title and then provoked derision by blaming a bruised toe for his timid performance.

In all honesty Chisora looks well short of top class and has lost three of his last four fights. He has weighed in 37lbs heavier than Haye but his rival enjoys a height advantage and a superior reach. Haye is entitled to be a bit ring rusty but his supporters can be assured he will not be lacking fitness as the loser of this fight will face relentless goading forevermore from the winner.

Arguably, because of the unique circumstances of this fight and because there is so much at stake in terms of reputation, layers have underestimated the gulf in class that exists between the two boxers and Haye, a proven top-level fighter, is bigger than he should be.
