PREVIEW
Chelsea belatedly came to life under Rafael Benitez with a 6-1 dismissal of Danish side FC Nordsjaelland in the Champions League on Wednesday. However, it was all in vain as events elsewhere conspired to send the Blues out of the competition and give the west Londoners the unwelcome distinction of being the first holders of Europe’s elite tournament to exit at the first stage.

They couldn’t hope for a better fixture than Sunderland today to vent some anger though, as Chelsea have won 14 of the last 15 games between the sides. That includes seven victories at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland’s recent form only makes a thrashing look more likely.

Martin O’Neill’s Black Cats have won just two league games this season and for the most part have relied on Steven Fletcher to provide the goals. For a club that has invested so heavily over recent years it really is quite pitiful how they have played for most of the year.

Chelsea are on their worst run in the league for 18 years, having failed to win in seven league matches, and defeat today would surely be the final straw for fans already angry at Benitez’s appointment.

But Sunderland haven’t beaten Chelsea at home in 12 years and look massive outsiders against a team with so much quality. Chelsea would have been around 1.4 on BETDAQ a few months ago but can be backed at a massive looking 1.81 today.
