The reigning Copa America champions begin their 2011 campaign as short price favourites against Venezuela on Sunday. First impressions might be that the 1.21 available to backers on Betdaq is a little skinny given that Brazil have only won one of the last three matches between the sides, but that statistic doesn’t really tell the full story.

A 2-0 win for Venezuela in a 2008 friendly and a 0-0 draw achieved in 2009 during the World Cup qualifying process are the only two occasions in 20 meetings when Brazil have failed to beat its South American neighbours. And the aggregate head-to-head goal count reads Brazil 82-6 Venezuela.

Thanks in part to the tournament taking place in Argentina, Brazil must make do with second place in the outright tournament betting, behind the even money hosts at 3.04, but they look decent value for it to secure a hat trick of titles.

By contrast the Venezuelans are grouped firmly among the outsiders at a whopping 515 on Betdaq. They are judged by FIFA’s latest rankings to be the 69th best national team in the world, sandwiched between Ecuador and Armenia, and 62 places worse off than Mano Menezes’ men.

Venezuela’s last outing saw a 3-0 reverse against Spain and a similar scoreline could be coming here. Back Brazil with a -2 Asian Handicap at 2.23.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Brazil (-2 Asian Handicap) at around 2.23: 4 points

Saturday’s Return: -6 points
