The pressure on Andre Villas-Boas was cranked up another notch following the below-par performance against Birmingham City in the FA Cup. Chris Hughton’s side fully deserved a replay and now Chelsea meet Napoli in Italy this evening.
With no disrespect to Birmingham, the threat the Italians offer is going to be a big step up in class. Chelsea reached the knock-out stages by topping their group, but interestingly they failed to win any of their three away games in Group E. The Blues drew twice and were beaten in Germany by Bayer Leverkusen as they went on to win their group for the fifth time in six seasons.
Chelsea have really struggled away from home in the league of late and have recorded just one win in six away outings.
The Italians may have conceded too much ground to Juventus and AC Milan in the title race, but their impressive 3-0 win over Fiorentina sets them up perfectly for Chelsea’s visit. Napoli have one of the most feared attack forces in the competition with Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi leading the line.
Edinson Cavani and Hamsik both have four Champions League goals already, while Lavezzi has been the supplier with three assists. John Terry remains a doubt, but whoever starts at the back is going to have a tricky evening keeping Napoli quiet.
Napoli will be confident of taking a lead to Stamford Bridge having seen Chelsea’s disjointed performances and they are worth backing to add to Villas-Boas’ problems at around 2.45 on BETDAQ.
